No. 119,927,, Patented Oct. 17,1871
PATENT QFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOYS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,927, dated October 17, 1871; antedated September 29, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY N. GALLAGHER, of the city and county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to that class of toys which are made with wheels or moving toys. Its nature consists in providing a peculiarly-con structed clasp and guard as a means of securing them to a board or track in such a manner that while they are free to move on the track they are not liable to run or fall off, and by their form and construction they retain the moving part on the track without the aid of any weight below it, its object being to facilitate the movement of the toy in certain ways.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of a toy embodying my invention, A B being a portion of the track. Fig. 2 shows a view from above of the wheels with the guards for keeping the toy on the track. Fig. 3 shows a portion of the track, on a smaller scale, with the clasps E E in the position of passing the handle F on the under side.
0 O are the wheels. D is the guard extending down bythe side of the track AB; then turning to a short distance and there forming a clasp or fork, E, embracing the edge of the track; or by making a groove in the edge-of the track; a
teat or stud to run in that groove may be used instead of the fork, the guard D being attached to the axle or other convenient part of the toy, the guard D with E forminga guide keeping the wheels on the track, while the whole is easily removed from or put on by springing the olasps a little apart, the track A B being made circular, oval, straight, or any desired form, and held by handles if preferred.
I do not claim attaching a toy to a circle, as shown in patent No. 74,308, dated February 11, 1868, or any part of that invention; mine differing essentially from that in not using any weight below the track, and in having two points D and E of guidance on each side, and also in the open clasps E E, enabling the moving part to pass the handles, or, if desired, to be removed from the track.
I claim- A toy, composed of a moving portion, whose weight is supported wholly above a track on which it runs, and is retained by the guards D D and clasps' E E, and a track with handles so placed as to allow the moving portion to pass freely, when constructed and operating in the manner and for the purpose above described.
H. N. GALLAGHER. Witnesses:
