Be it known that I, MARTHA E. MEIBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Barbara, in the county of Santa Barbara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Boards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.,z

rlhis invention relates to ironing boards, and the primary object of the invention is to provide an ironing board which is composed of a pair of hingedly connected sections so that the board may be folded into av compact ferm Vwhen not in use, and it is particularly designed for use by travelers who can fold up the board and put it in a trunk or suitcase while traveling from place tov place. r

A further object of this invention is to provide means for holding the sections of the ironing beard in an extended operative position and also yto provide means for attaching the ironing board to a table or analogous support.

`With the foregoing and other objects in view this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.

In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like and corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a bottom plan of the improved ironing board. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the ironing board showing the same in an extended position7 in solid lines and in a partially folded position in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view of the ironing board taken en the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view of the ironing board in a folded position.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 and 2 designate the sections of the ironing board whichA are practically of equal length, and have their meeting edges hingedly connected by hinges 3. The leaves of the hinges 3 are counter-sunk in the sections 1 and 2 of the ironing board so as to eliminate protruding hinges. The sections 1 and 2 have a plurality of eye screws 6 connected thereto in spaced relation to each other, and projecting outwardly from the edges of the sections. The eyes 7 of the eyescrews 6 form supports and guideways for rods 8, which rods extend across the meeting hinged ends of the sections 1 and 2 and hold them rigidly in place when the sections are in extended operative position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. The section 1 has a pair ef eye screws 9 attached to its opposite side adjacent to its rear end, in which one end of the rods 8 are seated, when the -ironing board is in a folded inoperative position.

A clamp structure 10 is carried by the under surface of the section 1 at its rear end and comprises a substantially U-shaped bar 11 which adjustably carries a clamping screw 12. The clamping screw 12 is adapted for clamping against the under surface of a portion of a permanent support, as indicated at 13 for securely holding the ironing board attached thereto as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The sections 1 and 2 have strips of canvas indicated at 14 secured to their upper surfaces, and flannel strips 15 are secured to the outer surfaces of the canvas strips 14 for providing an ironing surface.

In reducing the invention to practice certain minor features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be altered to suit practical conditions provided l such alterations are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.

vWhat is claimed is In an ironing board structure, the combination, of a pair of hingedly connected sections, a plurality of eye bolts carried by and projecting outwardly from the edges of said sections, rods slidably carried by said eye bolts and adapted for extension across the meeting ends of said sections for holding the sections rigidly in an extended operative position.
