COVER-FASTENER.
Application filed April 3, 1916.
T0 all 'whom t 'may concern:
Be it known that I, JANE IV. I-IELMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Haven, in the county of Van Buren and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cover- Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fastening means for container covers and the primary object of the invention is to provide a means for fasten-ing a cover for a jar, bottle or any other similar container which is provided with a cover.
As a further object ofthe invention the device contemplates the provision of a spring pressed collapsible fastening means which may be employed on any cover that is to be fastened to a container having a flange formed at its rim.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a container cover which consists of comparatively few parts and 1s simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.
For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which Figure l isa side elevation of a container showing the fastening device attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a top plan. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section of the upper portion of a container showing the fastening means applied thereto.
The container 1 has its upper edge provided with a flange or rim 2 and the cover 3 of the container is also provided with a flange t which engages the flange 2 of the container l as is clearly indicated by Fig. 3 of the drawing.
An arcuate arm 5 formed of any suitable material is provided at one end with an inturned flange 6 while the opposite end of the bar 5 is provided with the knuckle 7 through which the hinge pin or pintle 8 is extended. Pivotally mounted on the pintle 8 is a swinging latch arm 9 the free end of which is provided with a flange l0 similar to the flange G.
Mounted on the top of the cover 3 is a coil expansion spring 11 the upper end of which Specification of Letters Patent.

engages the end side of the arm 5 thereby pressing the arm 5 upwardly and pressing the cover downwardly, thus causing the flanges 6 and 10 to tightly contact with the flanges 2 of the container while the spring 11 causes the flange 4 of the cover to tightly contact with the top of the flange 2 of the container. An extension of the knuckle which forms the hinged portion of the member 9 is provided which serves as a finger latch l2. By pressing on the arm 5 immediately over the center of the spring 1l with the thumb, and with the forelinger moving the latch 12 to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, the latch 9 will be moved out of engagement with the flange of the container and the cover thereof may be easily removed from the top of the Container.
From the foregoing it will be observed that a very simple and durable cover fastener has been provided, the details of which embody the preferred form. I desire it to be understood however, that slight changes or modifications in the minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
I claim:
l. In combination with-a container having a lateral securing flange at its rim and a cover for the container, an arcuate arm having one end bent inwardly for engaging the rim of the container and its opposite end terminating at one side of the center line of the container, a latch arm pivotally carried by the end of said arcuate arm, the free end 0f the latch arm being bent in` wardly to engage the lip of the container, the said arcuate arm and the said latch arm having their engaging ends connected to provide swinging movement of the latch arm, and a coil expansion spring disposed between the top of the container and the under side of said arcuate arm.
2. In combination with a container having a lateral flange at its rim and a cover for the container, of a fastening member adapted to extend in an arc across the top of said container, each end of the fastening member being provided with inwardly bent flanges for engaging the said rim of the container, the said fastening member including an arcuate arm having one end bent to provide a hinge element, and a latch arm.
hingedly connected to the end of the arcuate arm, the end portion of the latch arm being provided with an extension bent to form a latch finger, and an expansion coil spring interposed between said arcuate arm and the top of the said cover.
3. In combination with a container having a lateral securing flange at its rim and a cover for the container, an arcuate arm provided with a flange at one end thereof for engaging the rim of said container, a latch hingedly mounted on the opposite end of said rim and provided with a flange for engaging the rim of said container, and resilient means interposed between the cover of said container and the under side of said arcuate arm.
4L. In combination with a container having a lateral securing flange at its rim and a cover for the container, of an arcuate arm engaging with the flange 0f said container, resilient means interposed between the top of said cover and the under side of said arcuate arm, and means for releasing said arm from engagement with the rim of said con tainer when said resilient means is com pressed.
5. In combination with a container hav# ing a lateral securing flange at its rim and a Copies of this patent may be obtained for cover for the container, of a fastening device comprising an arcuate arm having a flange at one end thereof, a latch hingcdly mounted at the opposite end of said arm and provided with a flange for engaging the rim of said container, and finger operated means for releasing said latch from engagement with said rim.
6. In combination with a container having a lateral securing flange at its rim and a cover for the container, of a fastening device comprising an arcuate arm having a hinge at one end thereof, a latch hingedly mounted on the hinge at the end of said arm, the end of said latch being extended to provide a finger latch, a coil expansion spring interposed between the top of said cover and the under side of said arcuate arm, and means carried by the end of said arm and the end of said latch for engaging the flange of said container.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signa-- ture in presence of two witnesses.
