To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. ANDER- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beds, of which the following is a specification. 1

This invention relates to improvements in folding bed structures iand more particularly to a folding double decker, in which two single cots positioned one above the other may be folded up when not in use, against a wall or other support.

One of the objects of my invention is to provide a pair of single bunks or cots positioned one above the other, of sturdy, rigid construction adapted to be readily folded up against a wall during the day time.

A further object of my invention is to provide a comparatively inexpensive, all metal structure that is sanitary, easily operated, strong and not liable to get out of order. Other and further objects will become apparent to those skilled in the art from a consideration of the following description and drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved double deck bunk opened out for use. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the bunk folded up against a wall or other support. Fig. 4 is an end view of the bunk opened outfor use. Fig. 5 is an end view of the bunk when folded up against its support; and Fig. 6 is a fragmentary sectional view on the line 6 6 of Fig. 2.

In general my invention comprises the utilization of four parallel spaced apart vertical corner -posts connected together by means of two steel cot frames, spaced one above the other, as is usual in the ordinary form of so called double deck bunks. In my new arrangement, however, I have provided one set of corner posts that may readily be attached to a side wall or partition and the corners of the bedframe are.

pivoted to the posts so as to provide a fold- Y ing frame structure, operating on the principle of parallel links, which may readily be folded up when not in use, throwing the vnormally horizontal bed spring frames up into a substantially vertical plane close to the supporting wall or partition. This arrangement leaves the Hoor space, when the bed is folded, perfectly clear, the entire structure projecting from the wall but a few inches. The great utility of this form of folding double decker for-use in places where floor space is limited, such as railway construction cars, bunk houses, boats, railway cars, cabins, dormitories and the like, is obvious.

In the specific embodiment of my invention illustrated the numerals 10-10 indicate a pair ofl vertically disposed angle bars, spaced apart a distance equal to the length of the bed to be supported, and secured to an upright surface, Asuch as a wall or partition 11, by means of the screws or bolts 12.

The bed or cot carrying structure is of the well known form comprising a rectangular frame work 'having side bars 13 and end bars 14 from which is suspended the wire spring fabric 15. The outer pair of corner posts 17-17 are independently braced by the pair of parallel cross members 18-18. The outer corners of the bed frame are pivoted to the inturned flanges of the corner posts 1.7-17 on the bolts 19-19, Extending outwardly from the inner pair of corner posts 10-10 are brackets or ears 20 securely riveted as at 21, to the outwardly eX- tending flanges or legs of the angle bars 10-10. The inner portions of the cot frames 13 are pivoted on the outer ends of these brackets 20 by the bolts 22. It will be noted that the brackets are not pivoted to the cot frames at their eXtreme inner corners or edges, but at points spaced inwardly from the ends so that when the structure is folded up, and the end posts 17-17 moved toward the posts 10-10, sufficient room is provided between the bed frames 13-13, which now occupy substantially vertical position, and the wall for inclusion of the bedding and mattress. Foot and head pieces 14 are `secured to the end members 14 of the spring frames and since they fold within the plates 20 serve as guards, keeping the bedding from becoming caught in the hinge connections. In order that the Vbed may be retained in its folded position I have provided a pair of latch members 23 carried by the posts 10-10 and adapted to engage the pins 24 on the lower ends of the outer posts 17-17 when the bed is in folded position.

Whereas I have illustrated and described a single embodiment of my invention it is in the structure without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. Y Having described my invention, what I claim is In a double deck folding bed adapted for attachment to an upright supporting surface, the combination of a pair of parallel, spaced apartrvertical angle irons, each disposed with one leg flat against the support for attachment thereto, and the other leg projecting at right angles to the support, outwardly extending` plates secured at two different levels to the outwardly projecting legs of the angle irons, a second pair of iarallel, spaced apart vertically disposed angle irons, each disposed with one leg in the plane of its corresponding outwardly extending plates and their other legs projecting away from each other in a plane' parallel to the supportingsurface, upper and thereof lying ina vertical plane, footV and head members carried by theV end members inside the planes of saidv plates,VV and means for pivotally connecting the vertical legs of the end members to the*V inner sides of said plates and to the inner sides of the legs Vof the last mentioned pair of vertical angle irons which lie in the same plane as said plates.
