IMPROVED ENCLOSED FOLDING- SPRING-BED.

The Schedule referred to in these .Letters Patent and making part of the same.

To all Iwhom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LOUIS DEROME, of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in EnclosedFolding Spring-Bed; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use thc same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a top view of my improved folding springbed, opening out.

Figure 2 is a side view of the same, partly in section, through the line x x, iig. 1. Figure 3 is the same viewas tig. 2, but showing the bed folded up. V

My invention has for its object to improve the construction of my improved folding bed, described in Letters Patent No. 38,035, granted to me, March 31, 1863, so as to make it more convenient and effective' in use; and

It consists inthe constructionY and combination of various parts ofthe apparatus, as hereinafter more fully described. l

A represents the case of the folding bed, which may be made in` the form of a bureau, book-case, wardrobe, or any other convenient form.

The front of the case A is provided with doors, B, which, when closed closely, enclose the folded bed,

and which,rwhenl opened, may be turned back, along the sides of the caserA, so as to be entirely out of the way, or may be connected with hooks to the side edges of the bed, as shown in fig. 1, to serve as guards, to prevent children from falling out of the bed. r O is a spring-bed bottom or mattress, which is made in two parts, hinged to each other at the lower edge ofthe cut or joint, as shown in figs. 2 and 3, sothat the said parts may be folded together, bottom to bottom, as shown iu iig. 3. This `construction allows the mattress or spring-bed bottom to be folded up, with- The inner end of the inner or foot-part of the springbed bottom C, has pivotingfpins or gudgeons, D, attached to its side edges, which enter and work in notches formed in blocks E, attached to the inner sides of the sides of the case A.

The pivoting-pins D are kept in place in the notches of the blocks E, by the bars or blocks F, the lower ends of which enter the mouths or open parts of said notches, and which are detachably secured in place by screws, passing` through the upper parts of said bars or blocks F, and screwing into the sides of the case A, as shown in iig. 2, and in dottedline's in fig. 3.

The jointed or middle part of the spring bed-bottom C is supported, when the bed is opened out, by

legs G, the upper ends of which are pivoted tothe side edges of one or the other of Vthe parts of the said spring-bed bottom C, at or near the joint, as shown in gs. 2 and 3.

H is the head-board, which is hinged,I at its lower edge, tothe frame-work of the bed-bottom, as shown in figs. 1, 2, and 3, so that it may be turned down upon the upper part of the mattress or` bed-bottom, as shown in tigs. l and 3, when the bed-bottom is to be folded.

To the ends of the end-board H are attached eyes, I, into which hook the hooks J, to hold the said endboard erect, as shown in fig. 2.

The hooks .I are pivoted to the side, edges of the spring bed-bottom O, and, when unhooked from the eyes l, are hooked into the eyes K, attached to the sides of the said bed-bottom C, to keep said hooks in place, when the bed-bottom is folded, as shown in tig. 3, and in dotted lines in fig. 2.

The. outer end ofthe bed-bottom C, when opened out, is supported by legs L, rigidly attached to it, and to the lower ends of which are attachedcasters, M, which, when the bed-bottom is being folded up, roll along the floor, and thus support the weight of the outer part of said vbed-bottom, while being folded.

The forward parts of t-he lower edges of the sides of the case A are connected by a thin metalliovbar or plate, N which will hold the said sides of the said case A securely in place, and which should be so thin that the casters M will rollover it readily. The plate N may, if desired, be made so wide as to form a bottom to the case A.

O is amosquito-net bar, `which is made in about the shape shown in g. 1, and theends of which are pivoted to the sides of the outer end of the spring bed-bottom C.

The side arms of the bar Ohave eyes, P, formed upon them, in such positions that they may come just `above or just below the eyes I of the end-board H,

when the bar O is 'raised into an erect position, so that the said bar O may be held in place by the hooks J, as shown in g. 2. Y

When the spring-bed bottom is to he folded, the bar O is turned down into the position shown in tig. 1. In cold weather, or when the bar O is not required for use, it may be turned down beneath `the outer part of the spring-bed bottom O,.so as to be entirely out of the way, as shown in iig. 3, where it may be se' ,cured in place by a hook, or .other convenient catch.

Having thus described my invention,

I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A sectional bed and bedstead, folding into a case or closet, and provided with hooks J, bar O, and side arms, with eyes thereon, all constructed, arranged, and f adjusted as set forth.
