Description
H. G. SONNENBERG. REMOVABLE TYMPAN HOLDER FOR PRINTING PRESSES.
APPLICATION FILED OCT- 30, I915.
Patented J uly 25,1916.
i The platen 8 is suitably furnished HENRY Gr. SONNENBERG, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
REMOVABLE TYIVIPAN-HOIJDER FOR PRINTING-PRESSES.
Application filed October 30, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY G. SoNNEN- BERG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Removable Tympan-Holder for Printing-Presses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: to provide holders for tympan sheets and make-ready therefor, which may be detached and removed from a printing press platen without loss of the makeready; to provide means for preserving the make-readys used in platen printing presses, thereby facilitating the running of successive orders; and to sim plify the construction and to reduce the cost of said holders.
Drawings.-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a printing press platen, shown as detached from the press and having a tympan holder and tympan constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention; and Fig. 2 is a detail view in per spective of a holder constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention.
DcscMpt2'0n.As seen in the drawings, a frame 7 is shaped to fit the upper end of a platen, such as indicated by the numeral wit tapped holes to receive screws 9. header bar 10 of the frame 7 extends across the edge of the platen to receive tympan sheets 11. In the present instance, the tympan sheets 11 are arranged to hold the makeready devices, such as the registering blocks 12 and grips 13. Fillers or building strips may be added to the tympan sheet below the exposed surface thereof.
The sheets 11 are all perforated adjacent the upper edge to pass over the heads of screws 14:. The screws 14 are permanently mounted in the header bar 10 and the shanks of the said screws register with, to be engaged by the end opening slots 15 formed in the bail 16. The bail 16 is mounted to swing on pivots 17, to spring over and clamp the sheets 11 to the header bar 10, the slots 15 extending around the shanks of the screws 14. When the bail 16 is accurately adjusted, the screws 14: are set up to Specification of Letters Patent.

clamp the bail 16 on the header bar 10 of the frame 7.
The make-ready for any particular job is perfected after the bail 16 is clamped to the frame 7. If, in the course of-operation, it should be desired to temporarily discontinue the run of the material for which the makeready was formed, this may be accomplished by withdrawing the screws 9 and removing the frame 7 and the bail 16, together with the tympan sheets 11, the conventional bail 18 being left to release the lower edge of the said sheets. The tympan sheets 11 and make-ready formed thereon, together with the frame 7 and hail 16 are stowed away to await for a renewed use thereof. When it is desired to replace the make-ready, the frame 7 and bail 16 with the sheets held thereby are placed on the platen 8, the screws 9 being driven into non-threaded holes provided in the platen, when it will be found the tympan sheets and the makeready perfected thereon, are in perfect register with the printing frame, stereotype, or other printing member which was previously used in connection with said tympan and the work performed therewith.
By using tympans and make-readys thereon, while preserving the register of the same to the type bed, an added facility is imparted to the press and the work performed thereby.
Claims:
1. A holder as characterized comprising a frame adapted to be removably attached in fixed relation to a printing press platen; a plurality of clamping screws operatively mounted therein; and a swinging bail pivotally mounted on said frame, said bail having end-opening slots to engage the shanks of said screws.
2. A holder as characterized comprising a frame adapted to be removably attached in fixed relation to a printing press platen; a plurality of clamping screws operatively mounted therein; a swinging bail pivotally mounted on said frame, said bail having end-opening slots to engage the shanks of said screws; and a plurality of removable screws for holding said frame rigidly on said platen.
3. A holder as characterized comprising a rectangular bail frame for infolding the upper edge of a printing press platen; a In Witness whereof I have signed my plurality of clamping screws operatively name to thls specificatlon in the presence of 10 mounted therein, a swinglng ball plvotally two subscribing witnesses.
