SAMUEL L. HOWARD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PBINTING-PRESS-TYMPAN BAIL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 17, 1915.
Application filed May 28, 1915. Serial No. 30,917.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL L. HOWARD, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Printing- Press-Tympan Bail, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: to provide a printing press with means for preserving tympan sheets and the make-ready secured thereon when the same is removed from service on the press; and to provide a simple, efiicient construction for maintaining the original registration of the makeas on the line 3 ready.
Drawings.-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a printing press platen having a tympan bail constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention, said bail being shown in service relation. Fig. 2 is a perspective view on an enlarged scale, showing a bail constructed and arranged in accord ance with the present invention; Fig. 3 is a detail view on an enlarged scale, showing an edge fragment of the platen, a bail constructed in accordance with the present invention in service relation thereto, and a clamp partially holding a tympan sheet on said bail, said figure being a section taken 3 in Fig. 1; Fig. & is a section on a similar scale, taken as on the line 47-4: in Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a section on a similar scale, taken as on the line 55 in Fig. 1.
DescMptz'0n. -As seen in the drawings, the platen 10 is provided at the lower edge with a swinging bail 11 of conventional form. When the bail 11 is depressed, as seen in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the tympan sheet 12 is clamped in service relation to the platen and is there held firmly. The upper or outer edge of the tympan sheet 12 when mounted in accordance with the present invention, is clamped to the bail 13 by the clamp bar 14:. To this end, as seen best in Figs. 3 to 6 inclusive, the tympan sheet 12 is folded over the upperand outer edges of he bail 13 and in this position drawn taut.
To hold the sheet 12 on the bail 13 and when the said bail is swung to relieve the tension on the sheet.12, or to permit access to the under side thereof, is the function of the bar 14:. The bar 14 is supported on the bail 13 by pins 15, which extend through perforations 16 in the said bail. The pins 15, as seen best in Fig. 4 of the drawings, are pointed to puncture or pierce the material forming the sheet 12 where it is stretched across the entrance to the said perforations. The pins 15 also operate as pivots on which to swing the locking levers 17 into service position. Each lever 17 has a handle 18 extended in the same plane with the body portion-of the lever and a clip hook 19 extended from the side thereof adjacent the said bail 13, the clip hooks 19 having each a blade-like extension to out a slot in the tympan sheet and to enter recesses 20 provided in the bail 13.
Operatz'0n.The tympan sheet 12 is disposed on the platen 10 and there secured by the bail 11 in the conventional manner. At the upper or outer edge of the platen, the
If the tympan sheet 12 having been set, registering pins or make-ready is required, the said sheet may be lifted away from the face of the platen, the bail 13 swinging on its pivot to this effect. If the operator desires, the sheet may be removed from the platen without disturbing the make-ready or registering pins thereon. When in the course of operation, the attendant wishes to replace the sheet 12 with the make-ready,
this is usually accomplished by first adjusting the perforated end of the said sheet on the bail l3 and to the bar 1 1 and levers 17 thereof. In making this adjustment care is exercised to dispose the hooks 19 of the levers 17 in the cuts previously formed thereby in the said sheet. The readjustment of the sheet bein thus secured at the upper end, the bail 11 1s tightened over the lower end of the sheet and the tympan sheet will be found to be adjusted to the work to be performed by it.
