Description
SHARON P. DOANE.
Improvement in Nozzle for Oil Cans.
119,031 I Q Patented Sep' 19,1371.
Vitnes 5 es I nventor UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
IMP ROVEMENT IN NOZZLES FOR OIL-CANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,081, dated September 19, 1871. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SHARRCN P. DOANE, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improved Nozzle for Oil-Cans; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawing are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or I scienceto which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvements without further invention or experiment.
My improvements in nozzles for oil-cans con- I sists, first, in the employment of a wiregauze partition, through which the oil must pass be fore reaching the nozzle, in order to intercept any dirt or other particles which would otherwise lodge I in the small end of the spout and choke up the passage and secondly, in the employment of a sliding punch, by which the opening at the extremity of the nozzle can be cleared if it should,
by accident, become filled with dirt.
Inorder to more fully illustrate and explain my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- A represents the nozzle or spout of any oil-can.
At the base of this nozzle, where it screws upon the oil-can, I place a gauze cap or partition, 12, through which the oil from the can must pass before entering the nozzle. This partition strains the oil, and allows no particles to pass through which would lodge in the passage and choke the nozzle. At or near the middle of the nozzle I out a 'narrow slot, f, lengthwise with it; I then take a cap, 01, which is made concave to fit the outside of the tube, and secure to its middle, on
slot will permit the wire to move. This leaves the small end of the nozzle open so that the oil can pass out around the wire; and if the small end should, by accident or otherwise, become choked, the obstructing substance can readily be removed by pushing the cap toward the small end so as to employ the wire 0 as a punch to clear it. In order to make the joint between the slot and cap tight the cap should be pushed back as far as possible when using, as, when the cap is pushed forward, it will be loose, owing to the conical shape of the nozzle. Either one or both of these devices may be used on the nozzle, as desired.
By this means I provide a nozzle that is not liable to become choked; and in case it does the ready means are at hand for clearing it without the necessity of cutting off the end of the nozzle, as is necessary when no such appliances are at hand. For oil-cans that are used with farming and other out-door machines this device is especially applicable, owing to the liability of dropping the can in the dirt, or of its becoming choked while oiling a dirty machine.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The nozzle or spout A, slotted at f, and provided with the sliding cap. d and punch 6, substantially as and for the purpose above described.
2. The nozzle A, provided-with the gauze cap or partition b, in combination with the sliding cap cl and punch e, substantially as and for the purpose above described.
In witness that the abovedescribed invention is claimed by me I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
