ICE-CRUSHER.
Application filed March 25, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNI-IARD L. SCHMIDT, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Davenport, Scott county, Iowa, have invented. a certain new and useful Improvement in Ice-Crushers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to ice crushing machines and is directed more especially to the construction of the cylinders and the cylinder teeth or ice picks and the manner of securing same to the cylinder; and the particular object of my invention is to provide the construction of a tooth or pick that is of substantial form capable of being most securely fastened to the cylinder and provided with means insuring perfect alinement and the preventing of lateral displacement.
lVith these objects in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved ice pick with a portion of the cylinder to which it is secured, in section. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the cylinder and Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof on a reduced scale.
In these drawings, in which similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views. I have illustrated the preferred form of my invention and show the same as comprising a tooth or pick consisting of the body portion 1 adapted to fit snugly on the outer surface of the cylinder 2, to which it is securely fastened by the screw threaded shank 3 made inte-- gral with the body portion. This shank is of large liberal proportion being of much greater diameter than the thickness of the body portion and made to extend well up on the sides thereof as shown. The shank extends through a suitable opening in the cylinder wall and is firmly bolted to place by the large nut 4. The picks are preferably arranged in rows around the circumference of the cylinder with the picks of one row in staggered relation to the picks in the adjacent row, and as they are driven with considerable speed when in the act of crushing ice and are made to pass between the Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July 11, 1916.
Serial No. 16,827.
teeth extending from a stationary bar located in close proximity to the surface of the cylinder (not shown), it is essential that they be most rigidly secured to the cylinder and that the least lateral displacement be most effectively guarded against.
As a means of preventing lateral displacement or the turning of a pick on its shank and also to insure the correct re-setting of a pick, even by the most unskilled, in the event replacement becomes necessary through breakage or otherwise, I provide the lugs 5 which are integral with and pendant from the under side of the rear end of the pick. This lug is made to enter the hole 6 drilled through the cylinder wall, back of and in exact alinement with the shank opening.
From the foregoing it will be readily observed that a very simple and yet highly etlicient means of securely bolting the pick to the cylinder and effectively preventing V lateral or turning movement thereof is prothe pick serves as a reinforcement therefor.
What I claim as new is:
In combination, a cylinder provided with pairs of openings in its surface, one of each pair being larger than the other and arranged in rows around the cylinder: and picks secured around the cylinder and each being formed with two depending portions, one of larger diameter than the other, to engage the pairs of openings in the cylinder. the larger depending portion being Of a diameter larger than the thickness of the pick, formed intermediate the length of the pick. adapted to pass through one Of the openings in the cylinder wall to form a bolt and a sole fastening means for securing the Signed by me at Davenport, Iowa, this 22nd day of March, 1915.
