EASEL DISPLAY-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July e, 19316.
Application filed May 3, 1915. Serial No. 25,449.
To all whom t lm ay conce/rn Be it known that I, GEORGE F. C. BIER- n'inTi-i, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Easel Display-Boxes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of'this specification.
My invention relates to easel display boxes, and has for its principal object to provide a display box which may be used as a container and comprises easel portions that may be spread to support the box in display position.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a box of this character wherein the easel eect is produced without necessity for pasting a supporting leg to the bottom of the box or for disturbing the contents of the box when the easel is opened.
In accomplishing the objects of the invention I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein zl Figure I is a rear perspective view of an easel container embodying my improvements. Fig. II is a central longitudinal section of the same. Fig. III is a cross section of the container with the easel members in nested position. Fig. IV is a detail perspective of the easel brace and its carrying member. e
Referring more in detail to the drawings 1 designates a container of any ordinary construction, but which is usually made of cardboard or the like, and is adapted for containing confections, toilet articles, or any small vendable article.
The bottom 2 of the box is die cut to form a supporting leg 3 that is free from the box at its side and bottom edges, and preferably scored at the top so that it may bend outwardly away from the box to form an easel leg upon which the box may be supported in an inclined position, as indicated in Fig. II.
Located in the bottom of the box or container is a loose insert 4, also preferably constructed of cardboard and of a size to fit snugly within the box, but not of sufficient thickness to lessen the capa city thereof, and formed integrally with the insert is a brace strip 5 that is folded back from the lower edge of the strip to lie between the strip and the leg part 8 of the bottom of the box when the latter is used merely as a container, but which may be bent out along the lower edge of the leo` opening 5 when the leg is spread from the bottom of the box, so that it may engage the easel leg and brace the same; the
free end of the strip being provided with wings 6 that may extend through a slit 7 in the lower end of the easel leg and be turned to form keepers at the outer side of the leg.
In order to hold the easel leg to the bottom of the box and prevent its accidental displacement while the box is used merely as a container and before it is placed on the show case to expose the contents of the box, I preferably leave connecting ears 8 between the easel leg and the body of the bottom 2 when the leg is being die cut; it being apparent that the ears are suiiicient to retain the easel in place, owing to the fact that there is slight direct pressure on the easel leg when the box is used merely as a container owing to the presence of the insert 5 which lies on the bottom within the box and forms a bridge across the leg part.
It is apparent that the box may be made up from a flat blank and that the easel leg may be die cut at the time the blank is formed; the ears 8 being left to form a support between the leg and the bottom portion of the box.
When the box is folded, the insert 4 is placed on the bottom with the brace 5 folded thereover and the box filled with confections or vendable articles and the cover applied. The box may then be used as a container in the ordinary manner, but should it be desired to exhibit the contents of the box on a show case or elsewhere, the easel leg is spread by vbreaking the ears 8 and bending the leg back at the scored line, or at the upper edge of the opening 5 if no score is provided.
When the leg is bent back the brace 5 is exposed and may be bent over the lower edge of the leg opening 5 and its free end projected through the slot 7 in the leg 3 so that the ears may be bent up to form the keeper. With the parts so arranged the box may be -supported in an upright position and at a slight rear incline to expose the goods advantageously; the weight of the box tending to spread the leg so that it pulls on the insert and obviates any tendency of the insert to push the contents of the box therefrom.
lVhile such an addition is not necessary, it may be desirable to provide the box with a base panel 9 that extends downwardly from the open edge of the box to lill the otherwise exposed space resulting from the support of the box on its bottom edge when the box is inclined. The upper portion of the box may be partially closed by a panel l0, which, with the base panel 9, enhances the appearance of the box, and provides space for advertising matter.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
l. An easel display box comprising a bottoni part having a leg out therein to separate from the box at its side and botto-1n edges, and an insert independent of but lying within the box and having a brace extending through the opening in the bottom of the box and locked to the easel leg.
2. An easel display box comprising a containing member having an easel leg cut from its bottom part and adapted for hinged movement, an insert located within the box and bridging the easel leg opening; the said insert having a narrow strip integral with and extending from its lower edge and initially nested within the box but ultimately folded to extend through the easel leg open ing; the said leg having a slot and the brace having wings adapted for projection through the slo-t and for spreading to provide keeper members, for the purpose set forth.
'In testimony whereof I affix my si 0fnature.
GEORGE F. o. Binn'wiern.
