To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PERCY REEvEs, citizen of the United States, residing atChicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display and Dispensing Packages; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention has for its object to provide a carton adapted for the shipment and subsequent display of merchandise especially such as is packed in small containers, at relatively large number of which are adapted to be received in the display carton.

The objects of the invention are;

First, to provide a carton of the character defined, the body portion of which is made from a blank comprising a single sheet of suitable material cut and scored to enable the same to be quickly and readily folded to produce the carton. v

Another object of the invention is to provide a carton made from a single sheet of material, the several parts of which exposed to view on the counter when in display position contain printed matter all of which is applied to one face of the blank.

A further object of the invention is to provide a blank of the character defined which, when formed into the carton, presents a plurality of walls of double thicknesses of material thereby presenting smooth upper edges and providing sufiicient' stiffness and rigidity of the carton without necessitating the use of heavy stifl material in the construction thereof.

A further object of the invention is to provide a carton of the character defined which includes a separate display figure adapted to be associated therewith and secured thereto and which coacts with the blank of which the carton body is formed to further render the same stiff and rigid besides adding to its attractiveness as an advertising display device for the merchandise contained in the carton.

Other objects of the invention will be readily understood from the following specification.

Referring now tothe drawings: 7 Fig. 1-- shows the blank cut by means of a die, or the like, from a sheet of relatively thick but not necessarily very rigid material, preferably paper. This blank has a substantially rectangular body portion which is scored along the dotted lines to provide a plurality of rectangular fields or elements 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 respectively, said blank being out along the several'solid lines to provide tongues and the like as hereinafter described. The field 1, which in the finished carton, constitutes the bottom wall of the same, is bordered by the scorings 6, 7, 8 and 9. The field 2 constituting a part of the front wall of the finished carton is bordered by the scorings 6 and 1.0 respectively, and by side edges 11, and the field 3 is bordered by the scoring 10 and the scorings 12 flush with the side edges 11 of the field 2, the latter being in turn flush with the scorings 8 and 9 bordering the field 1, and which are continued at 13 to constitute the side edge borders of the field 4. The latter is separated from the field 5 by the scoring 14L. The field 3 is bordered by the cut edge 15 of the blank and is integral with two extension flaps or tongues 16 at opposite ends thereof, each having an in clined upper edge and terminating at its upper outer corners in a hook 17.

The area 1 is integral with side flaps or tongues each comprising fields or areas 18, 19 and 20 respectively, the latter being separated from each other by double scorings 21 and 22. The said sideflaps when folded flange adapted to be folded over to lie between the areas 18 and 19 in the completed carton. The side walls thus formed are hollow and are adapted to receive the flaps or flanges 16 and also the flaps or flanges 23 integral with and extending outwardly from the field or area 4. Each of saidfiaps 23 has an L-shaped cut or slit 24 therein, which is adapted to receive the hook 17 i of the flas or flanges 16 as the blank is bent or folded 'onthe score line 7 to form the rear wall of the carton. The front, rear and side walls of the carton are thus readily assembled and held firmly in proper relative positions by the interengagement or interlocking of the hook 17 with the slots in the flaps or flanges 23. The flaps are turned in after the hooks 17 are engaged in said slots so as to lie between the flaps 16 and 23 and the inner portions or areas 18 of the end walls thereby firmly securing the areas 19 in proper position. The areas 19, constituting the outer faces of the side walls of the carton, when assembled, extend rearwardly from the rear wall constituting the area 4 and are provided at their outer ends with projections 26 adapted to engage in the slits or slots 27 in the areas 28 of the display figure, shown in Fig. 4, and bordering the main or. body portion 29 of the latter. Small tongues 30 border the areas 28 and are dividedfrom the same by the scorings 31, said tongues 30 being adapted to be received in the hollow spaces between theportions 18 and 19 of the side walls and the portions 28 being bent or folded on the scorings 32 to extend at an incline from the side edge portions of the body 29 of the display device to the rear wall of the box or carton.

The area 5 ofthe carton which constitutes the cover member is provided with a longitudinal slot 33 and with a slit 34 parallel therewith which terminates in ogee-curved extension portions 7 35 terminating in the scorings 3.6 parallel with the scorings 14. Thus said area?) presents a partial area on the flap" portion 37 which is adapted to be folded over to lie upon what constitutes the upper face of the carton when the latter is closed, and the lower face of said cover when disposed in display position, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3. When so disposed the exposed face of the flap 37 rests upon the in clined upper edges 38, of the areas 28 of the display figure. The portion 39 of said display figure may constitute the outline of a face or any other similar pictorial representation," and this is passed through theslot in the area or ,cover portion 5 of the carton after the portion37 of the latter has been folded back upon the body portion thereof- The said body portion 5 of the cover thus coacts with the flaps or flanges 25 to hold the display figure firmly in proper position, and the latter in turn serves to maintain the cover 5 in the desired position, and acts as a support therefor, thus renderin g unnecessary the use of very stiff material iuthe manufacture of the carton.

The finished carton is very attractive in appearance, besides providing a very convenient package for both shipping and display purposes possessing all the requisite elements of strength required of packages of this nature.

1V hile I have shown the preferred embodiment of the invention in the accompanying drawings, it will be obvious, of course, that such embodiment may be somewhat changed and varied in details of construction without departing from the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Particular attention is directed to the fact that the rear wall is of greater height than the front wall of the carton, and that the upper edges of the side walls are inclined to correspond. This renders the carton more attractive though it will be obvious, of course, that the relative sizes of the front and rear walls and the shape of the side walls may be changed and varied as desired to produce any desired shape of carton.

It will be noted that the fields or areas 5, 4, 1, 3 and 19 may bear printed matter applied to one face of the blank simultane- 95 ously with the scoring thereof, and that all y of these areas constitute exterior or visible areas of the carton when the latter is disposed in display position, this being advantageous from thestandpoint of economy in cost of manufacture.

I claim as my invention:

1. A container comprising a blank consisting of a single sheet of material cutand scored and'folded to provide a bottom wall, a front wall, two side walls, a rear wall and a cover, the front and side walls consisting of double thicknesses of material and the front and rear walls equipped at their side 'edges with integral tongues provided with interengaging formations and engaged with each other and lying in the hollow spaces of the end walls whereby the front, rear and 7 end walls are firmly held in proper position 7 relatively to the'bottom wall, tongues projecting from the rear ends of the endwalls,

a slot in the cover, and a cover-supporting member adapted to engage in the'slot in the cover and with slots in which said lastnamed tongues are adapted to engage'for firmly'securing said supporting member in place and firmly holding said cover in open position. V

2. A container comprising a blank consisting of a single sheet of material cut and scored and folded to provide a bottom wall, a front wall, two side walls, a rear wall and a. cover, thefront andside walls consisting of double thicknesses of 'rnaterial and the front and rear walls equipped at their side edges with integral tongues provided with inter-engaging formations and engaged with each other and lying in the hollow spaces of the end walls whereby the front, rear and end walls are firmly held in proper position relatively to the bottom wall, tongues projecting from the rear ends of the end walls, a slot in the cover, and a cover-supporting member having a middle portion adapted to engage in the slot in the cover and with slots in which said last-named tongues are adapted to engage, flanges at the side edges of said supporting member having inclined upper edges on which the cover is adapted to be supported when in open position, and tongues at the outer ends of said flanges adapted to be received and engaged in the hollow spaces in said end walls for holding said flanges firmly in position relatively to said supporting member and cover.

3. A container comprising a blank consisting of a single sheet of material cut and scored and folded to provide a bottom wall, a front wall, two side walls, a rear wall and a cover, the front and side walls consisting of double thicknesses of material and the front and rear walls equipped at their side edges with integral tongues provided with interengaging formations and engaged with each other and lying in the hollow spaces of the end walls whereby the front, rear and end walls are firmly held in proper position relatively to the bottom wall, the outer edges of the outer portions of the end walls terminating in flanges folded to lie between the inner portions of the end walls and the interengaged tongues opposing the same whereby the said outer portions of the end walls are prevented from turning up.
