Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 23, 1916.
Application filed September 18, 1914. Serial No. 862,307.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,JU 1A1 -I A. GILES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Derby, in the county of New Haven" and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a new and improved sash fastener, having for its object, among other things, the production of a fastener that will be semiautomatic in its action, and so designed that there are few parts, none of which require machine operations thereon, and are easily and quickly assembled.
To these, and other ends, my invention consists in the sash fastener, having certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals of reference designate like parts in the several figures; Figure 1 is a side View of my improved fastener as applied to a window frame, the upper and lower sashes of which are shown in section; Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a detail, perspective view of the lock plate.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the upper sash of a window frame and 2 the lower sash.
In the practice of my invention, I provide a sash plate 3 that is secured to the upper sash by screws, or other convenient means, having ears 5 thereon, in the underside of which is a socket 6, into which projects the trunnions 7 that project laterally upon both sides of the lever 8 having an opening 9 therethrough. The companlon sash plate 10 is secured to one of the window sashes and is provided with a cam lug 12 thereon, having a flat front face 13 and a rounded rear face 14:, which latter face is eccentric to the center of the trunnions 7 when the parts are in the relative position shown in the drawings, that is, with all of the parts in engage ment with each other and the window frames are locked against movement. In this locked position the cam 12 projects through the opening 9 in the lever 8 which contacts with the face 14 upon the cam 12 at the outer end of the said opening. The weight of the lever 8 is sufficient to hold it in engagement with the cam 12, and the greater the pressure thereon the closer the sashes 1 and 2 will be drawn together. By swinging the lever 8 upwardly upon its pivot mountmg, until freed from the cam lug 12, the connection between the sash plates is broken and the sashes can be moved independently of each other. If, when looking the sash fastener, the sashes 1 and 2 are not drawn together as tightly as possible, the action of the wind would ordinarily move them toward and away from each other. Under these conditions and while the sashes are moving toward each other, the weight of the lever 8moves it downwardly and it thereby secures a hold upon the cam surface 14: in a new and lower position, thus preventing the sashes from moving apart, and if the first movement of the sashes does not cause the lever 8 to lock the frames together, the continued movement thereof will produce this result and lock the sashes together and stop the rattling of the window frames.
Means are provided for positively preventing any tool or tools being passed between the meeting edges of the sashes 1 and 2, and thereby engaging the lever 8 consisting of the lock plate 15, that is constructed with a base portion 16, a neck portion 17 and a tongue portion 18 of greater width than the neck portion. This lock plate is slidably mounted in the sash plate 3, with the neck portion passing through the opening 9 in the lever 8, and the tongue projecting upon either side of said opening. While the lever 8 is being moved from its open to its locked position, that edge of the opening 9 adjacent to the pivot mounting engages the inside of the neck portion 17 and moves the same within the sash plate 3 so that the base portion 16 projects over the juncture faces of the sashes 1 and 2, as shown in Fig. 1. In this position it is absolutely impossible for any tool to engage the lever 8 from a point below the sash plates. While the lever 8 is being moved to its open position, the sides of said lever engage the faces 19 upon the tongue 18 and return the lock plate to its original position with the neck portion 17 thereof beyond the said juncture faces.
There are minor changes and alterations that can be made within my invention, aside from those herein suggested, and I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described but claim all that falls 1. In a sash fastener, the combination with a sash plate; of a lever pivotally connected therewith and having a cam opening therein; a lock plate slidably mounted in said sash plate below said lever and having a base portion, a neck portion and a lug portion with faces thereon, said neck portion passing through said cam opening; and a second sash plate having a cam lug thereon and engaged by one side of the opening in said lever.
2. In a sash fastener, the combination with a sash plate; of a lever pivotally connected therewith and having a cam opening therein; a lock plate slidably mounted in said sash plate below said lever and having a base portion, a neck portion and a lug portion with faces thereon, said neck portion passing through said cam opening; and a secondsash plate having a cam lug thereon and engaged by one side of the opening in said lever, the relative arrangement of all of said parts being such that when the said lever is being moved into its locked or down position, its engagement with the neck portion of said lock plate causes the latter to slide Within the first of said sash plates and move across the plane of the meeting edges of said sash plates, and when the said lever is being moved into its open or up position, its engagement with the faces of the lug portion of said lock plate imparts a similar sliding movement to said lock plate but in the opposite direction.
In testimony whereof I .affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
