WINDOW SASH FASTENER.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. I8. Isls.

A.12' l0 I Illllllll MELVIN D. KILIVIER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
WINDOW-SASH FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 2li, Mil.
application filed March is, 1915. seriai No. 15,249.
To all Mwm t may Concern.' 4
Be it known that I, MELVIN D. IxILMER,
a citizen ofthe United States, residing atl Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new-l and useful Improvements in Window-Sash Fasteners, of which the following is a specification. j,
My invention relates to yimprovements 1n window sash fasteners, and more particularly.' to that class or type known as ventilating sash fasteners that is to say,-a fastener which is adapted to hold or secure the upper or lower sash of a window, or both the upper and lowersashes when in a partially open position for the purposes of ventilation.
The primary object of my invention is 'to provide a generally improved sash fastener of this class, which -will be exceedingly simple of construction, cheap of manufac' ture, efficient in use, andv which may be readily and quickly attached to. and detached from "anydordinary window sash without the use'of screws,'nails, or other attachingele-lv f ments,'and also without the use of any tools in the application of theimproved fastener. A further object istlie' provision of a lock orfastener of this classy which may be carried in the` pocket or'handbag of a traveler for ready applicationv to boththe upper and lower sashes of an ordinary-#window for holding or securing such sash as against the further opening movement wheneither in a fully closed or partially closed position.
' A still further objectiis the provision of a fastener of this class which will effectively coperat-e with and lock the upper yand 'lower sashes inany adjusted position withouty in anyway marring or injuring the same while` in use, as well as one which 4will in no "way interfere with the free 'movements' of eitl'ier',` or both sash members. tof closed position ,f Without irst moving or rea'djusting the lock or fastener.
fastener of thisclass which will not`only be fully automatic in operation, but which'may be readily held or secured in released or inoperativeposition as in Washing the Window sash, and in other cases where it isdesired that the lock shall not be operative or automatic in its operation.
With the above mentioned and other ends in View, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in some of its embodiments in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, forming a partn of this specification, Figure l, is a vertical sectional view of the improved Ventilating sash fastener in its operative position applied to the upper and lower right hand corners of the lower and upper sash members, respectively, of a window,'the sash members of the window being in a partially open position for the purposes of ventilation." Fig. 2, a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3, a view similar to Fig. yl, showing a slightly modified form held in unlocked or inoperative position for washing the4 sash, or the like, with a slightly modified form of mounting or method` of attachment. Fig. 4, a front elevation of the same.l
` Similar numerals oflreference designate like parts throughout all the figures of the drawings. 4
*The* improved 'sashl fastener comprises an vattaching o r' 'baseplate '-1, *carrying an up- "ivardly projectingfbearing housing 2, open at IfacementI of such portion' of such upper sash.
l The rearwardly projecting portion ofthe cam comprises an offset operating 'handle 3d, by mejansof' which the cam 3, may betempo- 'rarily' held out yof engagement with the A e j 4 ,.uppersash., A still' furtherobject is the provision of' a ,o
As a, means of holding'the cam 8, into operative engagement with the upper sash so as to lock or fasten the sash members in any position in which they may be adjusted for ventilation, a, coiled spring 5, is interposed betweenv the attaching or; base plate 1, and the handle 3d, the-ends of said spring being heldin position by an obvious manner.
As a means of holding the cam 3, in an inoperative positionor out of engagement the stud members 5, in..
with'the upper sash as against the resistance ofthe expansion spring 5, to prevent the automatic operation of the caninicinber as in washing windows, and the like, the rearwardly projecting or handle portion 3, of
' thec-am 1s provided with a recess or openlng the form or embodiment shown in Figs.I 3
and 4 of the drawings the attaching or base plate 1,'is securedto thev top of the lower sash by means of attaching screws .7, while inthe forni shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a special form of attachingor clamping plate to be now described is employed.y
As a means ofgmore readily and quickly attaching the improved fastener to or def taching lthe same from any ordinary window sash withoutl the use of screws, nails,
or fother attaching elements, the attaching or base plate 1, is preferably provided with' a depending anchor portion vll?, the latter being adapted to be interposed between the rear upper portion of the lower sash 8, and the adjacent .lower front or face side of the upper sash 9, it being apparent that the parts 1, and la, are formed at such an7 angle as to conform to the form or contonr |of the upper portion of the lower sash'and that the depending anchor portion l, is adapted to prevent, any longitudinal movement of the attaching or base-plate 1, when the locking or latching cam 3,.is brought into coperative engagementfwitli'the upper sash 9. As
a means of detachablysecuring the attaching or.A base plate 1,1 to the upper portion of the lower sash the front .portion ofthe base plate 1, is provided with a `depending clamp member 10, provided With-athreadedportion adapted toreceive and lcontain a threaded clamping boltll, said clampingmernber 11, being provided with la winged or thumb head1-11, the opposite end'ofthe clamping 4bolt being provided with' a loosely mounted clamping head 12; By:v means.,A of. this clamping deviceit will be seen thatthe attaching or base plate 1, may be readily attached to the upper portion' of the lower sash of any ordinary window and at the same time may be readily detached if de- Sired.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, theoperation and advantages of my invention will bey readily understood.
Having thus .described some of the embodiments of my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
1. A sash fastener, comprising an attaching plate carrying a bearing housing, and a pivotally mounted cam in said housing and projecting from the front and rear sides thereof, Ithe front side of said cam being provided with acurved segmental recess and the rear side with an offset operating handle having an opening adapted to be moved to a plane at the rear of said bearing housing, a coiled spring interposed between the base of said housing and said odset operating handle, an intercepting element adapted to be inserted in said openingand to engage the' rear of said housing whereby said cam is held in an inoperative position, anda curved resilient upper sash engaging member removably mounted in said segmental recessat the front side of said cam.
l 2. A sash fastener, comprising a base plate carrying an overhanging housing open at its front and. rear sides said base plate being also provided with a projecting spring receiving stud, a cam pivoted in said housing andprojecting from .the front and rear sides thereof, the rearwardly projecting portion of said cam being odset to form a handle provided with an opening to receive an intercepting element` and a depending spring receiving stud above said `stud of said base plate, a coiled expansion spring taking over said spring receiving `studs and interposed between said base plate and said handle, and an intercepting element in said opening of said handle passing at the rear of said housing to hold said cam an inoperative position.
In testimony'whereof I have afiixed my signature' in presence of.' two witnesses.
I MELVIN D. KILMER.
