IMPROVEMENT IN STANDARDS FOR WAGONS.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JENs JENSEN, of Racine, in the county of Racine and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improve ment in Standards for VVagon-Beds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear, full, land exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part'of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view; Figs. 2 and 3, vertical transverse sections, Fig. 4, a horizontal section on line xm, Fig. 2.
The same letters of reference are employed in the several gures to indicate identical parts.
The nature of my invention consists in adjustable standards or straps for securing the side boards of a wagon-bed to the bot-tom of the same, the construction of which will be more fully described hereinafter.
A represents a bar of iron or of any other suitable material, which at its lower end terminates in a rounded stem, C, provided with a thread vand nut, D. The stem is made of any convenient length, and at its upper part a bar, B, is swaged to it and bent at a right angle, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The bar A is ilattened from the place where the bar B is swaged to it, and extends upward till about the heightA or top of the wagon-bed. The bar B runs parallel with and opposite the bar'A, leaving a spacebetween them of sufficient width to insert the side boards which constitute the wagon-bed. Both bars are provided with two or more apertures, through` which. the transverse bolts E pass, for the purpose of tightening the bars together and preventing the side boards from warping or being disconnected.
The mode of operation is as follows: The standards or straps, which consist of the parts A, B, and C, are placed in a vertical position, and the stem C is inserted in an aperture for that purpose provided in the bottom part at or near the edges of the wagon-bed, and passing through the bolster or some other cross-tie under the bottom of the same. The lower or threaded end of the stein projects sufficiently downward to allow the nut D to tighten the standard or strap to the bottom, and holding it irmly in its vertical position. The shoulder formed by the horizontal projection of the bar B will rest on the upper surface of the bottom of the wagon-bed. Thus the standard furnishes a rm support for the side boards, which are inserted between the bars. The standards are placed'in two rows, one row on each side of the bottom of the wagon-bed. Their Adistance from each other may be varied according to the notion of the maker. The standards and the inserted side boards inay easily be removed by unscrewing the nut D. Fig. 3 shows a modified construction of the above-described standard, the variation only consisting in inaking the bar B a separate part and connecting it to the main part A by mea-ns of a stud, A. The part B consists of a straight flattened bar, which at its lower end is provided with an aperture or slot, through which the stud A passes. Said stud is swaged to the bar A, and is at its outer end furnished with a thread and nut, A which serves to secure the bar B on the stem A. Thus the space between the bars A and B 'may be va ri ed accordin gto the thickness of the side boards, I and as the transverse bolts E, which pass through both bars, are provided on one of their ends with threads and nuts, they may easily be withdrawn and the inserted. side boards be replaced. The dotted lines in Fig. 3 represent the bar B placed further from the bar A, admitting thicker side boards to be inserted than those represented in full lines in the saine iigure.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl A standard or strap for securing the side boards of a wagon-bed to the bottom of the same, constructed substantially as herein described, the part B being .either swaged to the part A or made of a separate piece, so that the width of the fork can be adjusted to side boards of varying thicknesses.
