Description

JOHN W. TUTTLE, OF NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER `PACKING|'BOXES.
Specification forming partof Letters Patent No. 117,350, dated `Tuly 25, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. TUTTLE, of Newton, of the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pasteboard Packing-Boxes;
Vand do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, of which- Figure 1 is an end view, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section of one of my improved boxes.'
In carrying out my present improvement I form, through the ends or the opposite sides of the cover A of the box, slots or holes a a, and I fasten to the ends or sides ofthe box-bodyB two thin tlexile plate clasps or tongues, C C, each being formed as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, which represent front and edge views of one of such. The bodypart of the tongue is provided or formed with spurs or 'hooks to enter the body of the box and be bent down upon such, so as to hold the tongue to the box-body. The tongues arranged on and iixed to the box-body extend up underneath the cover or between it and the body, and into the slots of such cover, and are bent or turned down upon and below the chords ofthe slots, so as to hook upon them and hold the cover in place upon the body.
I am aware that in the making of packing boxes it has been customary to tix to the ends or' the body thin metallic clasps to extend up therefrom through slots in the top of the cover, and to be bent down upon such top, such being the subject of an application for a patent recently tiled by Alexander Gregg. I make no claim to such. Tith the holes made through the top of the cover instead of through its ends or sides the parts of the clasps bent down upon the top are liable to catch into boxes or articles, and do injury thereto, and besides they cause the box to have an unsightly appearance.
With my improvement the clasps are not in the cover-top in any respect, and, therefore, not liable to the objections above stated. Besides, they can `be bent or turned down in a hooked form upon and below the chords of the slots, and thereby constitute a stronger fastening than they do when simply bent at a right angle as they are after going through the cover-top.
Sometimes I pivot each ofthe hooked tongues to the boxbody by an' eyelet or otherwise, so as to enable the tongue to be revolved on the pivot, and I form the slot so as to enable the tongue to be introduced in a bent or hooked state into it, and be afterwards revolved, so as to hook upon the edge of the slot, this being another way of carrying out my invention. A
I claim- The box, as made with the slots in the ends or sides of its cover, and with the rlexile metallic tongues or clasps iixed to the body of the box, so as to extend into or through the slots or be extended into or through them, and bent or turned downward relatively to them, substantially as represented and described.
JOHN W. TUTTLE.
