IMPROVEMENT IN CARPET-SWEEPERS.

To all whom it may concern.:

Be it known that I, DON C. HALL, of Hannibal, in the county of Marion and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Oarpet-Sweeper; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved carpet-sweeper. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view, partly in section, of the same.

This invention relates to a new carpet-sweeper which contains a rotary brush and an apparatus for regulating the motion of the same. The invention consists in providing for an adjustment of the brush, as the same wears smaller, and of the frame in which it works. The inveiition also consists in the application of endless cords and pulleys for regulating and giving motion to the brush.

A in the drawing represents a circular brush fastened to a shaft, B, which is hung near the open front end of abox, O. The box is, at its rear end, pivoted to the bifurcated lower end of a handle, D. The forked ends of the handle are bent around tubular sockets a that project from ears I; of the box. Through the sockets a. and ears b is fitted a shaft, E, which carries two pulleys, c and 1. The pulley c is, by a cord, e, connected with a pulley, j', on the shaft B, while the the. pulley f1 is, by a cord, g, connected with a pulley, h, that is attached to the handle D near the upper end of the same. The bottom fi of the box C docs not reach far enough forward to support the brush, but leaves the latter free to rest on the floor, and to roll on the same. On top the brush is partly covered by a curved plate,j, which is made of sheet metal and fastened to forward projecting ears of the box. The shaft B has its bearings in plates Z I, `which are pivoted to the sides of the box, the shaft passing through slots in the said sides. By swinging the plates Z the brush can be adjusted vertically. Thus, as the brush wears smaller, it is gradually adjusted downward to be always within reach of the floor. As the brush wears smaller and is moved down the plate j is also bent down to serve as a proper cover. For this purpose the front ears a of the box are so curved that the plate can be bent over them to suit the smallest brush. The platesl can be locked in any position by a screw, a, passing through slotted arms of said plates. The box has a-lid, o, to let the dust be removed.

The device is used by being moved over the floor, whereby the brush is revolved to work the dust into the box. By turning the wheel h the motion of the brush may be acceleratedfN The handle, being pivoted concentric to the shaft E, can be swung independent of the action of the brush. An ulnvardl y and inwardly-projecting curved lip, p, is secured to the front end of the bottom fi. lt is in contact with the brush, and must be so in order to enable the same to throw the dust, &c., over its edge into the box. The tip p is so fbrmed that it can be sprmig to suit every position in which the brush may be, to keep the same at all times in working order.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The circular brush A, shaft B, box C, handle D, tubular sockets a a., ears I) b, shaft E, pulleysfc l h., and cords e g, all combined, as described, to form an improved carpetsweeper.

2. The pivoted and arc-slotted plates l l, lockscrew ln, and arc-slotted box C, combined, as described, with the brush-sh aft B, to embody a new way of adjusting the brush down as it wears away.

3. The box C, having the metal bottom i, provided with an adjustable metal dust-guide, p, which may be sprung into different positions, combined, asdescribed, with an adjustable brush, A B, to enable the guide to be always brought into cont'act with the brush as it is used up and moved down.
