Description
P. KEMP. CONEORMATORS.
Patented .m 4,a1s# 6.
Norm-9,415.
WASHINGTON D C N. PETERS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS P. KEMP, OF LAWRENCE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT lN CONFORMATORS.
SpecificatBn forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,415, dated July 4, 1876; application filed January 29, 1876.
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS P. KEMP, of Lawrence, in the county of Essex and Corn monwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved (Jonformator, of which the fol lowing is a specification:
My invention relates to that class of conformators designed to he used by batters in taking the size and shape of a persons head, from which to construct a bat, my object being to construct an apparatus which shall be simple, easy of application, accurate and durable in its workings, and at an expense far cheaper than those now in use; and I do declare that the following is such a full, clear, exact, and complete description thereof that others skilled in the art to which it appertains can make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, like letters indicating the same parts in each of the figures, of which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional iew of my improvement, showingits mechanism and the relation of its parts each to each; Fig. 2, an inverted plan view, showing the board designed to hold a paper, and catches designed to hold the paper to the same; and Fig. 3 a clamp and the manner'of securing the same to the frame.
A is a frame ,having a form as shown in Fig. 1, and designed to hold the board B, the clamps K K, the scrihearm G, and carrier 0; B, a board designed to be placed over the head to hold a sheet of paper, the same being held by the springs M M M M, on which the exact shape and size of the head are traced by a pencil placed in the scribe-arm G; G, a carrier attached to the center of B, and provided with the scribe-arm G having wheel F, and adjusted to O by a guide and socket, and designed to carry the scribe-arm around the head upon which it may be placed. D is that part of G designed to work in the socket of G; E, a spiral spring designed to press the scribearm and its pulley against the head; F, a pulley placed in the scribe-arm G, and designed to follow about the head the spring E, pressing the same against the head. ScribearmG is passed around the head by the carrier 0, and is provided with a pencil held against a paper by the spring H, the pulley F following, and the pencil in arm G marking the shape of the same; I, a pivot placed in the center of B, and designed to hold the carrier 0; K K, two clamps placed on the frame A, as shown in Fig. 1, and secured thereto by thum b-screws, the ends of A being slotted to allow of the same being adjusted to the head, and designed to hold the apparatus thereto L L, two thumb-screws designed to hold the clamps when adjusted; M M M M, four springclasps attached to the board 13, and designed to hold a paper thereto.
To use my said invention, first place a piece of paper 011 the under side of the board B; then place the apparatus on the head, clamping or holding the same in place with K K,
adjusting the same so that the wheel F will traverse the head at a point where the hat is desired to rest; then cause the carrier (3 to be passed around the head, when the scribe-arm, being provided with a pencil, will mark out on the paper the course traversed by F, not only giving the shape, but the exact size.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, the following, to wit:
1. In a conformator, constructed as herein described, the combination of the frame A with the board 13, the carrier 0, and the clamps K K, in a manner and for the purpose substantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination of the carrier C with the scribe-arm G, its shaft D, the springs E and H, and pulley F, in a manner substantially as and for the purpose herein described and se forth.
3. The combination of the frame A, the board B, the carrier 0, the shaft D, the spring E, the wheel F, the scribe-arm G, the spring H, the point I, the clamps K K, the screws LL, and the springs M M M M, in a manner substantially as and for the purpose herein described and set forth.
- THOMAS P. KEMP.
