Description
UNITED STATES PATENT I QFFICE.
THOMAS RILEY, OF WILLIAMSBURG, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES-LINE SUPPORTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 116,632, dated July 4, 1871; antedated J one 28, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS RILEY, of Willianlsburg, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clothes-Line Supporter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide convenient and efficient means for supporting that class of clothes-lines which is made to revolve around pulleys and is elevated from the ground, the clothes being placed upon the lower portion only of the line from a window, while the line is revolved around the pulleys .by hand to carry the clothes from the window. It will be seen that the clothes can be hung only upon the lower 01 tion of the line. Now, for securing the support and tension of the upper portion, I connect the two by an adjustable supporter, constructed and applied as hereinafter more fully described.
The accompanying drawing represents a sectional elevation of a clothes-line provided with my supporter.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
One end of the double line is attached to the building near a window or door, by means of a pulley-block. The other end is connected with an elevated pole or post, or to any other fixture at a distance from the house, by the same means as seen at A. B is the adjustable line-supporter. This supporter maybe fastened to the lower line C by means of the key D, or in any other suitable manner. E is a pulley inthe upper portion of the supporter, which rests on the upper por tion F of the line. The lower line C may pass loosely through the supportingblock, but I prefor to fasten it in the block as represented. When the clothes'are hung upon the line, it is designed that the supporter shall be in about the middle of the double line, so as to give the best support to the lower line throughout its entire length. The supporter is held stationary until the lower line is about half filled with clothes, when it is attached to and carried out with the line 0.
This is a cheap and convenient mode of securing the support and tension of the upper line, and will supply a want long felt by the city laundress.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The adjustable line-supporter B, constructed and applied substantially as shown and described.
THOMAS RILEY.
