OMAR F. NEFF, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SMOKE-HOUSE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 23, 1915.
Application filed January 15, 1915. Serial No. 2,406.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, OMAR F. NEFF, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Houses, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to improvements in smoke-houses, and has for its object the production of a device of this character which will be of improved construction and efficient in operation.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
rlhe invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a partially sectional front elevation of a smoke-house embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the device, Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken on substantially line :v -m of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged top plan view of the smoke distributing member provided in the bottom of the smoking` chamber.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a supporting frame consisting of four spaced upright angle irons 1. Arranged at the lower end of said supporting frame is a compartment 2 in which is slida'bly mounted a drawer 3 adapted, when the device is in use, to contain the burning coal, bark or other substance which is used in the operation of the device to produce smoke. r1`he front side of drawer 3 adjacent the lower edge thereof is provided with draft openings 4 which are controlled by a slidably mounted damper 5 having corresponding openings adapted for registration with the openings 4 and provided with an exteriorly projecting finger piece 6 for adjusting said damper. as clearly shown in Fig. 3. At its front side the drawer 3 is provided with a handle 7 for facilitating opening and closing of the same.
Leading from the upper side of compartment 2 and drawer 3 is an elongated pipe 8 of tortuous formation which is rigidly supported between the angle irons l. The upper end of pipe 8 is in open communication with the bottom of a chamber 9 supported by the angle irons 1 at the upper ends thereof. Chamber 9 is accessible through a door 10 provided at the front side thereof which is hinged at 11 and provided at its free edge with a lock 12 whereby the same may be secured in closed position. Said door is also provided with a window 13 through which the interior of chamber 9 may be viewed without the necessity of opening the door.
Provided at the upper end of chamber 9 is a transversely extending angle iron 14 to the depending portion of which is secured a plurality of hooks 15 adapted to support the pieces of meat, such as ham, bacon or the like, which it is desired to smokel Leading from the upper end of compartment 9 is an outlet pipe 16.
The pipe 8, as will be seen, communicates with the bottom of chamber 9 adjacent one side thereof, and in order to secure uniform distribution of the smoke introduced to said chamber throughout the interior of the latter, a plate 17 is provided which is supported above the bottom of chamber 9 upon an inwardly projecting supporting flange 18. The plate 17 is provided with perfor-ations 19 which are of graduated size, being smallest adjacent the inlet opening into said chamber', said perforations increasing in size as the same become more remote from said inlet opening. Through this arrangement, it will be seen that the smoke, which is first introduced into the narrow space formed at the bottom of chamber 9 between the plate 17 and the bottom of said chamber, will be distributed throughout the interior of said chamber so that the articles to be smoked, which are suspended above, will all receive uniform treatment. lNithout the production of the plate 17 perforated, as mentioned, it is, of course, apparent that the pieces of meat, suspended in close proximity with the inlet opening to the chamber 9, would be subjected to the treatment of a more dense smoke than the pieces positioned farther from said opening. In order to facilitate insertion or removal of the plate 17, the same is provided intermediate its ends with a hinge 2O which permits of folding of said plate during insertion or removal.
In the operation of the smoke-house. the smoke arising from the drawer 3 will enter the lower end of pipe 8 and gradually rise in the latter, being introduced into the chamber 9 and distributed therein for engagement with the pieces of meat or other substance arranged in said chamber in the manner Just described. Through the tortuous formation of the pipe 8, it will be seen, that rheat radiation than would be the case with la pipe vof circular or square formation.
Also, by reason of the tortuous formation of said smoke pipe, a construction is produced which is compact and conlined. This cooling of the smoke before the same is introduced into the treatingl chamber is of special advantage since it precludes the possibility of the cooking or baking of the meat contained in said chamber during the smoking operation, such as is universally the objection with smoke-houses in general use at the present time. Through the construction set forth the absolute cooling of the smoke before the same is introduced into the treating chamber is insuredand therefore the objection mentioned obviated.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself ofv such variations and modilications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A smoke-house comprising a smoke producing element; an elongated smoke passage leading from said element; a chamber in which the articles to be treated are adapted to be arranged and into the bottom of which said passage leads; and a foraminated foldable plate arranged in said chamber adjacent the bottom thereof for uniformly distributing the smoke introduced into said chamber throughout the latter, substantially as described.
2. A smoke-house comprising a supporting frame; a smoke producing element mounted in the lower end of said frame; a chamber in which the articles to be treated are adapted to be arranged, mounted in the upper end of said frame; and a smoke pipo establishing communication between the upper side of said smoke producing element and the under side of said chamber, said pipe being of tortuous formation comprising a plurality of superposed convolutions interposed between said smoke producing clement and said chamber, substantially as described.
3. A smoke-house*comprising a supporting frame; a smoke producing element mounted in the lower end of said frame; a chamber in which the articles to be treated are adapted to be arranged, mounted in the upper end of said frame; and a smoke pipe establishing communication between the upper side of said smoke producing` element and the under side of said chamber, said pipe being of broad liat formation in cross section, substantially as described.
fl. A smoke-house comprising a supporting element; a smoke producing element mounted in the lower portion of said supporting element; a chamber in which the articles to be treated are adapted to be arranged supported by said supporting element above and spaced considerably from said smoke producing element; and an elongated tortuous smoke pipe establishing communication between said smoke producing` element and said chamber, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
