Description

1. n. vHams. lumhined Ash-Boxes and Sifters.

PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN D. HEINS, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED ASH BOXES AND SIFTERS. 4
Speeilicationforming part of Letters Patent No. 146,826, dated January 27, 187.4 application filed January 11, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
I Be it known that I, JOHN D. HEINs, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improved Ash-Box, of which the following is a specification:
My invention is an improvement in portable ash and coal boxes or bins intended for lise in the kitchen. It consists in the arrange ment of a sieve and close ash-box in the large inclosing box, as hereinafter described,\vhere by wood may be conveniently removed, and also ashes may be siftcd without allowing any portion to escape, thus preventingl the annoyance which this process usually occasions.
Figure I is a front elevation ot' my improved ii'uel and ash holder. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line .fr x, and Fig. 8 is a transverse section taken on the line y y.
Similar letters oi' reference indicate coirespending parts.
VA represents the case, and B its extended hinged top, which will subserve,in practice, jrhe uses of an ordinary table-top. By partitions GII I, I form the Wood, coal, and ash chambers O D E. The wood and coal are supplied to O and D by raising the hinged cover B, and the former may be removed without disturbing said cover by turn ing down the door M, which is hinged at the front, and is of a Width less than the depth of box O. The coal compartment has the ordinaryr inclined shelf or chute K and a door, L, through which coal may b e removed from chamber F in such quantities as desired. A door, N, is arranged in the front of the case, opening into the ash-chamber E, in which is a box, O, having a removable cover, P, and containing a sieve, Q, in the upper part, in which the ashes are placed, the box being drawn out and the cover removed, to be sifted into the space below after the cover is replaced, the box returned :into the chamber, and the door N closed so as to confine the dust.
rlhe sieve is Worked by a detachable handle, to be introduced through the holes R and S. After the ashes have been sited out,the sieve can be taken out when the handle has been detached, and emptied into the coal-chamber D, and the ash-box O can be Withdrawn from time to time to carry the ashes away.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- I The close ash-box O, containing the sieve Q,
and arranged in the compartment E of the case A, the coincident holes R S being formed therein to permit the` insertion of a device adapted to operate the sieve, all as shown and described.
JOHN D. HEINS.
