FAUCET.
Specification of Letters Patent. 7 Patented Sept. 21, 1915,
Application filed December 23, 1914. Serial No. 878,721.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALoNzo W. OARE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Herrick, in the county of Shelby-and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Faucets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in faucets; and an object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the operation thereof is under control of a suitable key so that said faucet may be used only under predetermined conditions. 7
Furthermore, it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character wherein the operation thereof is under control of the receptacle or container to be filled.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved faucet whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claims.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view, partly in elevation and partly in section, illustrating a faucet and a coacting key member constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a view in top plan of the faucet as herein disclosed, the coacting key being indicated by dotted lines; and Fig. 3 is a View in perspective, detached, eof the key employed in the present embodiment of my invention.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, F denotes a faucet of ordinary or preferred construction having projecting exteriorly thereof the stem 1 of the controlling valve and fixed upon said stem 1 is a disk or plate 2 provided with the extension 3 to afiord a means whereby the disk or plate 2 may be readily operated in order to impart the requisite rotation to the stem 1 so that the flow through the faucet F may be readily and conveniently controlled.
As herein embodied, the extension 3 is provided with a knob 1 or the like in order that the plate or disk 2 may berotated with greater convenience. The upper portion of the faucet F in advance of the stem 1 is provided with the depression 5 adapted to be engaged by the bail Bof a containeror receptacle into which the faucet is adapted to discharge and such depressed portion is provided with the groove or channel 5 disposed longitudinally of the faucet F and in which is pivotally mounted the latch or dog 6 terminating at its inner or free extremity with the upstanding lug 7. The lug 7 is adapted to be received within the notch 8 produced at a predetermined point within the periphery of the disk; or plate 2' and serves to prevent axial rotation being imparted to the disk or plate.
A s herein embodied, the lug 7 is normally prOJected from within the groove or channel 5 under the influence of the flat spring 9 secured at one end to the bottom of said groove or channel and having its outer or free end bearing against the under surface of the dog 6.
As herein set forth, the notch 8 is so positioned as to lock the stem 1 against movement when its valve is in closed adjustment, although I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself in this exact respect, as under certain conditions it may be deemed advisable to have the notch so positioned as to lock the stem 1 against movement when in a different adjustment.
The bail B, as herein disclosed, is disposed through a sleeve 10 which may be also termed a key, and such sleeve or key 10 intermediate its length is provided with an annular flange 12 adapted to extend within the groove or channel 5 and to force the dog 6 downward sufficiently to disengage the lug 7 from the disk or plate 2. It will therefore be readily apparent that should a bail be disposed over the faucet provided with a key which is incapable of extending within the groove or channel 5, the faucet may not be operated. In practice, it is my purpose to provide the containers or receptacles, adapted to be employed in connection with a predetermined faucet, with keys which will permit such containers or receptacles to be employed only in connection with a particular faucet.
While I have disclosed the channel or groove 5 as elongated and the key or sleeve 10 provided with an annular flange, I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself in any Way as to the exact shape orformation thereof, as it Will be readily appreciated that such form is adapted to bevaried in accordance with the dictates of practice.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a faucet constructed in accordance With my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my inven- 7 tion is susceptible of some change and modi- Copies of this patent may be obtained for projecting valve stem and having a depression, a locking, means positioned within said depression and normally in operative engagement with the stem, and means for forcing the locking means Within the depression for releasing the stem.
2. A faucet including a projecting valve stem andhaving a depression in a face there,- of, a disk carried by the projected portion of the valve stem and provided With a recess, a dog pivotally engaged'within the depression, means for normally maintaining a portion of said dog exteriorly of the depression and within the recess of the disk, and means for forcing the disk within the depression I for disengaging the dog from the disk.
3. In combination with a faucet provided with locking means, an element adapted to be suspended from said faucet, and means carried by the element engageable with the locking means of the faucet for releasing said locking means when the element is in operative engagement with the faucet.
' In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
