Description
J. McLAUGHLIN. Compression-Cock.
Patented 0ct.11, 1875.
UNITED STATES JAMES MGLAUGHLIN,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMPRESSlON-COCKS.
Specification forming part ofv Letters Patent No. 168,657, dated October 11', 1875; application filed September 11, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES MCLAUGHLIN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Compression-Cocks, of which the following is a specification:
Figure lis a side view of my improved compression-cock, partly in section, to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same taken through the line mm, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved cock of the class known as compression-cocks, which will be so constructed that it may be fully opened and closed by a halt'- turn ofthe handle, which shall be ,entirely free from leakage, which shall be durable when used with both hot` and cold water, and which shall be simple in construction and not liable to get out of' order;
The invention will first be described in connection with drawing, and then pointed out in the claim. f
A represents the body of the cock. B is plugchamber, and C is the cap which is screwed upon the upper end of the plugchamber B. In the body A, just below the plug-chamber B, is a partition, a', which has a hole through it for thc passage of the water, and which forms the seat for the plug D. In the opposite sides of the plug D are formed two grooves, d', extendingfrom the lower end of the said plug D nearly to its upper end, to receive two pins, b1, projecting inward from the opposite sides of the chamber B. The lower parts ofthe grooves d are inclined,
and their upper parts are nearly horizontal,
so as to lock the plug to its seat when closed, and so that the plug may rise and descend quickly when being opened and closed. The grooves d pass around haltl the circumference of the plug D, so that the cock maybe fully opened and closed by a haltturn of the plug D. E is the stem, which passes out through a hole iu the cap C, andl has a handle, F, attached to its upper end. iTo the lower end of the plug D is attached fa wooden block, Gr, which fits into the hole inj'the partition af, and serves as a packing. H is a woodenV block placed upon the stem E in the chamber B, and which tits into a rabbet or seat, b2, formed for it yin said chamber, and into which it is firmly pressed by the cap C. The wooden block H ser'ves as a packing, and the top ot' the plug D `is pressed against it firmly when the cock isfopened, so that there can be no leaking around the cap C or around the stem E.
By lengthening the chamber B, and placing a spring' upon the stem E, between the plug l) and the block H, the device becomes a selfclosing cock.
The device can lalso be used for a steamvalve and for various other purposes.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The two opposite plug-grooves, d d', almost horizontal near top, and'then winding rpirally toward bottom,
scribed.
