a citizen of the United States, and a resident of 'Circleville, in the county of Jack- ,son and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chicken- Brooders, of "which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in chicken -brooders, and has for its object to provide a brooder of the character specified, which is easily transported from place to place,'and which may be used in the open air or in a room, and wherein a base is provided separate from the casing to permit the easy cleaning of the device as a whole, and wherein simple and inexpensive regulating mechanism is provided for controlling the temperature.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2, Figs. 2 and 3 are sections on the lines 2-2 and 33, respectively, of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4: is a perspective view of a portion of the curtain supporting mechanism.
The present embodiment of the invention comprises a casing consisting of side walls ,1, end walls 2 and 3, and an arched top the bottom of the casing being open. The casing is provided with a vertical partition 6, near the front end 2, and with a horizontal partition 5, which extends from the end 2 to the partition 6.
The casing proper and the partitions 5 and 6 are preferably of metal, as shown, and the casing is adapted to rest upon the floor of the chicken houseor any other support, and a fioor board or bottom plate is arranged between the partition 6 and the "end 8, the said floor board or bottom plate consisting of the plate proper 7, and a frame 8, which encircles the floor board at the sides and ends.
The plate orboard 7 is at the center of the frame, so that whenthe frame is seated on thefloor or ground the floor board 7 will be spaced above the supporting surface. That is, the frame .8 extends beyond both faces of the floor board, so that the floor board is spaced above the ground or fioor and at the sametime litter will be held from falling off the sides and ends of the same. The arrangement also provides for a dead "air space'beneath the floor board.
The partition 6 divides the interior of the casing, as a whole, into a small forward compartment, and a large rearward compartment, and the partition 5 further subdivides the small compartment into upper and lower compartments. The space above the partition 5 is further sub-divided into lateral compartments, by a vertically extending partition 9. Thus the interior of the easing is divided into a brooder chamber, namely, the large compartment between the end 3 and the partition 6, a lamp or heating compartment, namely, the space between the end 2 and the partition 6 and below the partition 5, and two small compartments above the lamp or heating chamber.
In the heating chamber a'lamp comprising a tank 10- and a burner 11 is arranged, and one end of the elbow 12 of a flue or draft pipe is-arranged directly above the burner. The said end of the elbowextends through anopening 13, in the partition 5, and thesaid end is provided with-a marginal flange 14;, whichis secured to the partition 5, by means of bolts or rivets 15. The elbow 12 gradually decreases in cross sec- -tion from the flange 11 toits connection with the body 16 of the draft pipe or. flue, and the said draft pipe or flue extends rearwardly to the rear end of the casing.
The end of the elbow remote from the flange 14 passes through an opening in the partition 6, and a return portion 16 of the flue or draft pipe is arranged parallel with the portion 16, being connected thereto by -means of a transverse pipe 17, at the rear of the casing. At its front end the return "pipe 16 passes through an. opening in thepartition 6 and through an opening in the front wall 2. The portions 16-16 and 17 of the draft pipe are jointed as shown, in order that they may be easily removed for cleaning or repairs, or the like.
The return portion 16 is supported by a substantially U-shaped hanger 18, connected with-the arched top of the casing, and the open end of the elbow 12 at the burner is elliptical in cross section, having its long the said cap is provided with upwardly and downwardly extending nipples or extensions 21 and 22, so that'there will be a circulation from below upward, through the cap and the extensions. The extension 21 is of greater length than the extension 22, preferably being about twice the length of the extension 22.
The cap and the extensions act as a draft apparatus or heat releasing means, and also as a wind break to prevent the holding of the draft from escape at the outer end of the return portion of the pipe. This wind break is detachable and may be removed if desired.
A partition wall 23 is arranged transversely of the interior of the outer end of the return portion of the draft pipe to pre vent the entrance of rain or water in any other form. 'A filling 24 of mineral wool or like non-heat conducting material is arranged around the lbow 12, in the compartment in which the elbow is arranged, the said filling being for the purpose of retaining the heat and preventing its radiation at this point.
A controlling or regulating device for regulating the temperature of the brooder chamber is provided, the said mechanism comprising a tube 25, secured at its upper end to a holding plate 26, connected to the top of the casing. and at its lower end the tube 25,is provided with a substantially U- shaped bracket. consisting of a body 27 and arms 28 and 29, respectively. The arm 28 has a collar 28 encircling the tube, and the arm 29 has a bearing 29 for supporting a heat wafer designated generally at 30.
A link or rod 31 is connected with the wafer and extends upwardly through the tube and through an opening in the top of the casing to a connection with a gate or valve 32. The gate or valve is arranged above an opening 33 in the top of the easing. and is hinged to the casing as indicated at 34. The rod is passed through the gate or valve near the hinge, and the rod is threaded and engaged by a thumb nut 35, in order to permit the distance between the gate or valve and the heat wafer, to be regulated.
When the temperature of the brooder chamber exceeds a predetermined degree,
, the heat wafer will expand as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, thus moving the link or rod 31 upwardly and raising the gate or valve 32 as indicated in dotted lines in the said figure. The gate or valve is thus controlled by the temperature of the brooder chamber and in turn controls the temperature.
It will be noticed from an inspection of Fig. 3 that the gate or valve 32 is curved transversely to fit roughly th curvature of the top of'the casing. An opening 37 is provided in the wall 2 at the burner, the said opening being closed by a plate 38 of transparent material, as for instance mica or the like, and the plate is held in a frame 39, at the opening on the outer face of the end wall. The opening 37 permits inspection of the burner without opening the easlng.
Inlet openings or ports 40 are provided in one of the side walls 1 of the casing at the lamp or heating chamber for admitting air to the burner, and a door 41 is provided in the opposite sid wall at the said chamber, for permitting access to the heating mechanism in the chamber.
The door 41 is provided with a handle 42, for convenience in manipulating the same, and the door slides in upper and lower guides 43 and 44, respectively, on the casing wall. The tank or body 10 of the heating mechanism has a handle 45 at the end adjacent to the door 41, for permitting the withdrawal of the heating means, and guides 46 and 47 are provided for holding the body of the burner in proper position with respect to the elbow 12.
Curtains 48 of suitable fabric material are arranged in the brooder chamber, each curtain extending from near the partition 6 to near the end wall 3, and the curtains are supported from rods 49. One side edge of the curtain is folded over the rod and secured to the body of the curtain, and the rods are held in bracket plates 50, which are secured to the walls 1 by bolts and nuts 51. The bracket plate has its upper end curved outwardly as shown more particularly in Fig. 4, and the bolts are passed through the lower ends, and engaged by the nuts outside of the casing.
The curtains do not extend the full .length of the brooder chamber as will be seen from an inspection of Fig. 1, and plates 52 are arranged at the ends of the curtains, each plate being an angle plate as shown more particularly in Figs. 1 and 3. One of the portions of each plate is secured to the adjacent end wall of the casing and to the partition 6, and the other portion extends parallel with the adjacent side wall but in spaced relation beyond the adjacent end of the curtain as shown. An entrance 52* to the brooder chamber is provided as shown in Fig. 3 in one side wall and the curtains are split or slit from the lower edge upwardly at spaced intervals as shown in Fig. 1, to permit the chickens to get behind the said curtains.
The curtains extend to near the upper face of the floor boards 7 and the said board is of a length to extend from near the partitition 6 to near the end wall 3.
In operation after the lamp is lighted and burning, the temperature of that part of the brooder which contains the chickens will be regulated by the gate or valve 32, so that no attention would be required for this part of the device after it is once adjusted except to refill and trim the lamp. The arrangement of the heat releasing mechanism 202122insures a steady uniform draft, regardless of outside conditions, and the said pipe and the pipe 19 carry off all of the disagreeable fumes from the burner.
I claim l. A chicken brooder, comprising a casing having an open bottom and provided with a transverse vertical partition near its front end and with a horizontal partition intermediate the top and the bottom between the front end and the .vertical partition, said casing having a vertical partition between the front end and the vertical partition above the horizontal partition, a base fitting within the casing between the rear end and the partition, said casing having a lateral entrance near its rear end, the casing having a door opening at one side between the front end and the vertical partition and a door mounted to slide over the opening, the casing having air inlets in the opposite side wall, a heater within the casing at the door opening, a heat conducting pipe leading from above the burner and opening through the horizontal partition and extending through the vertical partition to the opposite end of the casing, and having a return portion extending from the said opposite end to and through the front end of the casing.
2. A chicken brooder, comprising a casing having an open bottom, said casing having a vertical partition near one end and a horizontal partition between the vertical partition and the adjacent end, a heating device between the vertical partition and the adjacent end and below the horizontal partition, said casing having a door at one side for permitting the insertion and withdrawal of the heating device, a heat conducting pipe extending from the burner to the opposite end of the casing and having a return portion extending from the said opposite end to and through the end of the casing adjacent to the heater, said casing having a Copies of this patent may be obtained for vertical partition above the horizontal partition and between the first named vertical partition and the adjacent end, the inlet end of the heating pipe being at one side of the said last-named partition and the outlet end at the other side, and a filling of non-heat conducting material inclosing the inlet end of the heat conducting pipe.

A chicken brooder, comprising a casing having an open bottom and having a vertical partition near one end, and a horizontal partition between the vertical partition and the adjacent end, a heating device between the vertical partition and the adjacent end and below the horizontal partition, said casing having a door at one side for permitting the insertion and withdrawal of the heating device, a heat conducting pipe extending from the burner to the opposite end of the casing and having a return portion extending from the said opposite end to and through the end of the casing adjacent to the heater, and a branch pipe extending from the return portion of the heating pipe through the horizontal partition between the vertical partition and the adjacent end of the casing.

A chicken brooder, comprising a casing having a vertical partition near one end and a horizontal partition between the vertical partition and the adjacent end, said partitions dividing the interior into a front heating chamber and a rear brooder chamber, and an upper insulating chamber, a heater in the heating chamber and having a burner near one side of the casing, a heat conducting pipe leading from above the burner to the rear end of the casing within the brooder chamber and having a return portion within the brooder chamber extending to and through the front wall, a filling of non-heat conducting material at the inlet end of the heating pipe, and means for reguloating the temperature of the brooder cham- CHARLES S.
