STOVE.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD E. CLAwsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State ofvCalifornia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to heaters, and particularly to heaters adapted to be mounted upon gas ranges or other stoves.
It is a purpose of this invention to provide an inexpensive, removable heater that may be readily attached to ranges or stoves in which the combustion takes place upon the upper surface; also to provide a device whereby the fumes and obnoxious gases generated by the exterior burners of the stove may be condensed and conveyed away so as to be entirely removed from the possibility of commingling with the air of the room; and to provide means whereby the heat generated by combustion may be utilized forl heating fresh, pure air which may be conducted to some other room or compartment.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combinations of parts as `hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation, in partial section, of the hood. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the fresh-air inlet.
In the present embodiment of my invention, I employ a suitable casing or hood A, having inner and outer walls 2 and 3, forming thereby an inclosed chamber 4 partially surrounding the inner wall 3 with-the exception of a front opening 5 by which access may be had to the interior of the casing when it has been placed in position over the top or burner-plate of the range B. This front opening 5 is adapted to be closed by a sectional door or cover shown as comprising longitudinal section 6, the lowermost of which is provided with a handle 7, whereby it may be raised and the superposed sections 6 will be telescopically shifted to entirely open the front of the chamber.
When the sections are in their lowered position, the fumes, heat and steam due to the cooking of material and the combustion within the hood A, are conveyed upwardly and outwardly through a suitable pipe or other connection 8 tothe chimney, indicated at 9. rally becoming heated when the range is in operation, thereby heats the air in the chamber 4, and this heated air is utilized for heating other rooms in the building, and to accomplish this I have provided extending upwardly from the top of the outer wall 2 of the casing A a suitable flue 10.
In order to supply a continuous current of fresh air into the chamber 4 as the heated air ascends and escapes through the flue 10, I convey to the lower back portion 11 of the casing A, through a suitable pipe or conductor 12, fresh air. Preferably the conductor 12 is connected to the exterior of the building in which the range may be used, thus supplying fresh air from the outside. In order to increase the temperature of this incoming air as it leaves the conductor 12, it is deflected upon opposite sides of a deflec tor 13 and passes around the lower portion of the casing A, thence upwardly, as indicated by dotted lines 14, and then rearwardly through a vertical passage 15, and thence again forwardly past suitable deflectors 16, until it at last escapes with the maximum degree of heat up the flue 10, which is located preferably immediately above the top of the hottest portion of the casing A.
In order to facilitate the opening of the sections 6, I att-ach to one of the sections 6 a suitable cord or cable 17, which passes upwardly through the guides in which the sections 6 slide and over a pulley 18. To the free end of the cord 17 is connected a balancing weight or its equivalent 19. One of these balancing devices being connected to each end of one of the sections 6 materially assists in opening and sustaining the sections in any position in which it is desired to leave the same. By this means the operator may raise the sections so as to provide any desired height of opening between the lower edge of t-he bottom section 6 and the range burner plate, thus affording ample draft to insure proper combustion, and also perfect access to the contents of the hood.
If desired, means may be connected to the oven whereby its interior may be lighted, and I have shown for this purpose an electric socket 20 attached to one of the sides of the casing A and provided with an exterior handle 21 for the operation of the same.
It will thus be seen that I have provided as a whole means for conveying away obnoxious gases and steam commonly gener-- ated by ranges when their burners are exposed, and I also arrange the casing A so as to utilize what would ordinarily be lost heat by forming the casing with double walls and conveying away the air from the space between these walls. In order to properly control the draft and circulation through the receiving chamber of the casing and the air heating chamber, I interpose suitable dampers 22 in the flues 8, l0.
The apparatus thus constructed is also a safeguard against re which might otherwise be communicated from the burners.
Troughs 23 will be arranged around the edges of the interior wall 3 for the purpose of catching condensed moisture and draining it out of the rear through a suitable drain-pipe 24.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters- Patent, is:
l. A combined cooking and heating attachment comprising an interior cooking compartment into which the heat is directly received, an escape flue leading therefrom, an exterior shell inolosing three sides and the top of said compartment and having horizontal alternating air-directing dia-` inspection gates at the front, an exterior A shell heated from said compartment with intermediate horizontal air-directing partitions at the sides and a hot air delivery passage at the top, and an air inlet at the bottom with a deflecting plate to divide the incoming air.
