' To all whom. it may concern CII Be it known that we, CHARLES W. BLACK- BURN and LEMUEL C. SI-IATTUCK, citizens of the United States, residing at Bisbee, in the county of Cochise and State. of Arizona, have invented cert-ain newv and useful Improvements in Collar-Buttons; and we do hereby declare the following to be affull,

clear and exact description of the invention,

such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to buttons, and more particularly to collar buttons, and one of the principal objects of the invention is t0 provide a button which can be easily inserted in a button hole, and which cannot become accidentally detached from the collar when inserted.

Another object of the invention is to provide a button having a hinged'shoe which is comparatively flat, and which will serve as a bodliin for forcing its way through a starched button hole, and which when turned at right angles to the button post will hold the same firmly in place.

The foregoing and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a button made in accordance with this invention, and showing the hinge shoe or bodkin in position to be inserted in the button hole, Fig. 2 is a' central longitudinal section through the same, Fig. 3 is a View in side elevation and partial section showing the hinged shoe turned at right angles to the post, Fig. 4L is a view in side elevation of the button with the shoe or bodkin extended, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the pintle member for the hinged shoe or bodlrin, and Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the brace for the interior of the post.

Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the head of the button, which may be of any suitable form, and 2 is the hollow post connected to the head in any suitable manner and `preferably made of a single piece of sheet metal bent into a Hattened tube. The post 2 has a recess 3 in one side thereof, while the opposite wall 4l of the said post extends up beyond4 the recess, as shown at 5.

The pintle for the hinged shoe or bodlrin is formed of a strip of metal having spaced legs 46 connected at one end by a curved pintle bar 7, said bar being concave upon its upper 'side and convex on its' inner `side,

as shown moreclearly in Figs. 2 and 3. The legs 6 are inserted in the post and said legs are pressed outward against thel side walls of the post by means ,ofa piecefof metal 8` having'a'n angular flange 9 at one end thereof, said metal piece forming a holder or wedge to force the legs 6 against the inner side walls of the post 2, and the iiange 9 extending outward flush with the edge of the recess 3, as shown more clearly in Figs. 2 and 3. The combined shoe and bodkin member comprises a flat piece of metal bent upon itself at 10 and the terminals of the metal strip being rounded oif at their outer ends as at l1 and said ends being secured together in any suitable manner. The shoe is provided with a pintle bearing bent outward from one side thereof near one end as indicatedl at 1 2, said pintle bearing being rounded to lit and to swing upon the pintle 7 and extending at a slight distance from the bearing 12 is a rounded head 13 which fits within the recess B'when the combined shoe and bodkin is in extended position, as shown in Fig. 2.

The natural resiliency of the pintle portion 7 andthe bearing 12 is such that when the bodkin is thrown out in the position shown in Fig. 2, there is a spring bearing to hold it in this position, and this action is assisted by the thumb of the user placed upon the topof the head 13 to hold `the bodkin in position for inserting it in a button hole. When the combined shoe and bodlrin 7 is turned to the position shown in Fig. 3, it is also held by a slight spring l action of the pintle within the bearing 12.

Various changes may be made in the de-v a rounded head adapted to fit in thel said recess when the shoe is in position'to enter a button hole, and means for holding said pintle member within thepost.

A button comprising a head, a hollow post connected to the head and provided with a recess upon one side, a pintle member comprising spaced legs held Within the post by means of a plate having an angular flange, and a combined hodkin and shoe pivoted to said pintle member, said bodkin and shoe comprising a flat strip of metal bent upon itselil and having anenlarged bearing for the pintle and a rounded head adapted to be seated in said recess when eX- tended in position to enter a button hole.

3. A button comprising a head, a fia-t reetangular hollow post, a pintle member provided with spaced legs inserted in the post and held therein by a plate, said pintle member having a curved eross bar, and a combined shoe and bodkin having an enlarged hearing member for said bar, and a rounded head, said cross bar and bearing therefor having a spring action to hold the Combined shoe and bodkin in tivo positions1 one in alinement with the post, and the other at right angles thereto.
