To all whom t may'conc'em: p y 'A Be it known that I, JOHN LANQAN, aeiti- Zenof the United States, .residing at4 Fortland, in the county of Multnomah and `State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in DisappearingBeds, of whichthe following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in disappearing bedsand 4has for its object to provide means for folding a bed, mattress and bed clothes within a cabinet Vfor the purpose. i Another object is to provide a folding disappearing bed adapted to its purpose without the necessity of the usual bedclothes clamps.

These objects are attained by means ofl the improvements herein specified and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bed and cabinet, showing the bed lowered into position for use. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the cabinet with the bed folded inside and the bed clothes and mattress removed. Fig. 3 is a detail view in perspective of the bed frame and shows the hinged sides, legsupporting rods, legs and leg braces. Fig. 4 is a sectional side elevation of the cabinet with the bed folded inside and is taken on A--A in Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a cabinet divided by shelves into three compartments, as at 2, 3, and 4, of which the upper compartment 2 and the lower compartment 4 are intended for wearing apparel, linen, and bed pillows, as at 5. The large intermediate compartment 3 is intended to receive the folded bed frame and bed clothes.

A door 6 ishingedly attached to the cabinet at 7 for the purpose of closing it and is provided with a clothes-bar 8 upon which garments may be hung for the purpose of inclosing them within the cabinet. 1f desired, casters may be provided for the support of the cabinet, as at `10.

At 9 is provided a pivot rod horizontally disposed within compartment 3 and extending from side to side of the cabinet to which it is attached. The bed frame is preferably constructed of metal, as indicated at 11, but could be made of wood if desired. It will be noted that the bed frame 11 is shown in two sections which are lhingedlyfattached,

A staple 22 is rigidly attached to each leg intermediate of its ends for the reception of the ends 20 of the aforesaid braces, the projections 21 tending to keep the braces from going through the staples too far. The length of the braces and their proper disposition are determined by the location of the staples, so as to hold the legs in vertical position when the bed is lowered for use. Pins 23 are keyed into the upper ends of the braces to prevent them from sliding out of their bearings 19.

By referring to Fig. 1, it will be seen that the forward section of frame 11 is provided with 4 legs and the rear section with 2 legs, the rear end of the rear section being supported within the cabinet by the pivot rod 9 upon which it is pivotally mounted, so that it may be swung upwardly into the position shown in Fig. 4, in which a mattress and bedding 24 are shown as carried by the bed-frame. To facilitate manipulation of the bed for the purpose of folding it within the cabinet, a lifting weight 25 is attached to a cable 26 which is fastened to the bed frame near one of the hinges at 28, and passes over a pulley 27 in such manner that the weight is carried within and near the rear of the cabinet, the lower shelf or floor of compartment 3 being cut out to permit the weight to drop through into compartment 4.

It is obvious that various alterations may be made to conform with the requirements of the bed, without deviating from the spirit of the invention, as for instance, two weights which they are attached, aslby rivets, to the Aiframe built in two sections hingedly attached to one another, means for pivotally carrying the free end of one of the sections, rods carried by the bed frame and extending between and from side to side, legs pivotally'mounted on said rods, staples carried by the legs intermediate of their ends and brace bar s pivotally mounted on the bedfraine and having an angularly bent end with a side projection near said end, so that the end may enter the aforesaid staple up to the side projection for the purpose of locking the legs in supporting position.

A disappearing bed comprising in combination a cabinet, a bed frame consisting Aof two sections hingedly attached to one another and having the free end of one of said sections pivot'ally supported in said cabinet, said sections being adapted to fold upwardly at the hinged ends and to swing back into said cabinet, and means extending from the upper part of said cabinet and attached to said bed sections near the hinged ends thereof and operating to pull said hinged ends upwardly and back into said cabinet, said bed frame sections being provided at their hinged ends with supporting legs pivotally attached and adaptedV to swing in parallel relationship with each other into the bed frame sections at opposite sides of the hinge joint, substantially as shown and described.
