To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AXEL A. SAWMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boats, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in boats, and especially life boats.

It is now usual to provide life boats with air tanks for buoyancy, which said tanks are fastened by nailing, riveting or other means, to the boat, and usually under the seats. But when the air tanks are thus fastened it is difiicult to remove them, and in the removal the tanks are liable to injury.

It is therefore the purpose of this invention to provide means for removably retaining said air tanks in proper position in the life boat, so that they can not accidentally shift their positions in the various emergencies of the use of the boat, but can be readily removed and replaced without injury to tanks or boat whenever it is desired to inspect, remove, renew or replace said tanks.

The construction and arrangement of the parts of my said invention will be evident from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, whereof- Figure 1 is a longitudinal elevation and section of a life boat equipped with my invention; Fig. 2 is a cross section on a large scale of a life boat of slightly difierent form, and showing a tank on one side of the boat in full lines, and indicating a tank being removed by dotted lines on the other.

Said tanks T are respectively properly shaped to fit under said seats B at their respective positions, and are arranged end to end for practically the entire length of the boat, and so that it will not be possible to remove said tanks by endwise move ment while the retaining rods C are in place. Said retaining rods C are vertical stiff rods, preferably of metal, having their lower ends stepped in holes in foot blocks or boards 0, and having their upper ends resting in through and through holes (23 in the outer part of said seats B; said holes (Z being normally covered by metal plates 6, which are screwed on the upper side of said seats B. Thus, when said plates 6 are in position, said rods Care retained in their normal position. There is a red C for each tank T, said rods being preferably located about midway between the ends of each said tank T. Thus, when said rods C are held in position by sald plates 6, said tanks T can not be removed; but when it is desired to remove any tank, one of the screws of the proper plate 6 is unscrewed, and said plate 6 is then swung around to uncover its proper hole 01, so that the desired rod C can be removed, and then that tank can be readily withdrawn, and another tank put in its place, and so for any or all the tanks. Of course more than one rod for each tank could be used.

N ow having described my improvements, I claim as my invention. The combination of a boat, side seats thereof, having a space beneath them, a series of tanks substantially filling said space, removable rods adapted to prevent lateral removal of said tanks, and means to lock said rods.
