Application filed August 31, 1914. Serial No. 859,370.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, T'HAYER B. FARRn IG:
TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Draft-Regulating Devices in Locomotive Front Ends, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to'improvements in draft regulating devices in locomotive front en s.
It has been discovered that the draft through the lower flues of superheater locomotives is far in excess of that through the upper flues whereby the superheater tubes are deprived of a large amount of heat and the combustion over the grate area is very unequal.
The object of my invention is to provide means whereby the draft through the superheating tubes and small flues located above the baffle plate can be equalized with. the draft through the small flues below the baffle plate.
drawings, in which- 7 Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through the center line of a locomotive front end provided with a superheater of familiar type; Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line m-m of Fig. 1. 3
Similar numbers refer to similar parts in both views.-
In the drawings 1 represents the flue sheet secured in the shell 2 in the usual manner and through which extend the superheater tubes 3 and the flues 4. The superheater tubes 3contain the superheater units or coil 5 through which the steam travels from the steam dome (not shown) to the superheater header 6 and thence to the cylinders through the steam pipe 7, and to the lift pipe 8 through the exhaust column 9 and nozzle 10. A baffle plate 11 and table plate 12 having an apron 13 and a netting 1 1, constituting the smoke arch are all of the usual construction and require no further description.
7 My invention consists of a bafiie plate 15 which is secured to the flue sheet 1 and boiler shell 2 in such a position with'reference to the tubes 3 and flues 4 that the draft which passes through the tubes below the superheater tubes 3 will be impeded and thereby cause a stronger draftthrough the tubes and flues above said bafiie plate 15. A
closer adjustment of the lower edge of the I attain this object by themechanism illustrated in the accompanying 1 Patented J ne 9, 1915.
baffle plate is saves r01 by' an additional apron 16 which'is adjustably secured to said baflie plate 15 by means of bolts 17 which pass through slotted openings 18 in said apron. By means of the baffle plate 15 and apron 16 the areas of the passage 19 from the upper section and the passage 20 from the lower section into the smokearch can be regulated in proportion to the effective areas of the large and small flues in each section. This proportion being constant when the proper position of the apron 16 has been determined by calculation or experiment, it need never be moved; however,.if desired, means may be provided whereby the apron 18 may be raised or lowered from the outside of the smoke box. It is to be observed that the baffle plate 15 forms with the smoke arch. a free and unobstructed passage, 'ex- 1. In a locomotive boiler comprising a set of upper flues containing superheating coils and a lower set of'fiues with unimpeded passages with both sets of flues communicating with a common smoke box, a smoke arch in the smoke box extending over the openings of both sets of flues into the smoke b ox,'and
a baffle plate secured in the smoke box under the smoke arch between the two sets of flues and extending downwardly over the openings into the smoke box of the lower set of flues to form with the smokearch a free and unobstructed passage, except for the superheater coils, from the upper set of fluesinto the smoke box, said baflie plate operating-to restrict the draft'through the lower set of unimpeded flues and to increase the draft through the upper set of flues containing the superheating coils.
2. In a locomotive boiler comprising a set of upper fiues containing superheating coils,
and a lower set of flueswith unimpeded passages with both sets of flues communicating with a common smoke box, a smoke arch in the smoke box extending over the openings of both sets of-flues into the smoke box, a v baffle plate secured in the smoke box under the smoke arch between the two sets of flues and extending downwardly over the openings into the smoke box of the lower set of fines to form with the smoke arch a free and unobstructed passage, except for the superheater coils, from the upper set of fines into the smokebozg. said baffle. platetoperat= ing to restrict the draft through the lower set of unimpeded fluesand to increase the draft through the upper set offiues containing the superheatingi'coils, .andzan: apron adjustable on the lower edge of the baflie plate to regulate proportionately the draft 10 through the two sets of fiues.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto afiixed my. signature. intthetpresence of two witnesses.
THAYER B. FARRINGTON.
