To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I JOHN P. MoNoAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locomotive-Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to Which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates particularly to locomotive boilers, but more generally to horizontal flue boilers, and has for its object to provide simple and efficient means whereby superheated steam or steam that is very dry, may be produced without re uiring a radical chan e in or addition to oilers already in use. enerally stated, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
In accordance with my invention, I place within the boiler, preferably a short distance ahead of the fire box, a so-called baille late through which the fines are passed. his baille plate divides the front and rear poi'- tion of the boiler into different compartments. The baille plate is perforated at its upper portion so that the pressure will be aplied in the front and rear portions of the boiler, and in such manner that the altitude of the water in the rear portion of the boiler will be maintained always above the top of the lire box while the altitude of the water in the front portion of the boiler may be maintained at somewhat constant, but varying level below the uppermost flues. This arrangement permits portions of the upper lues to be exposed in the front com artment of the boiler above the water leve so that they will become very hot and will superheat the steam in the front portion of the boiler. Also, with this arrangement, it is advisable to bring the dome forward and lo cate the same above the front compartment of the boiler.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the. several views. Referring to the drawings,

Of the parts of the boiler, the numeral 3 indicates the fire box; the numeral 4i that portion of the boiler that incloses the lire box and within which the so-.called rear compartment of the boiler is located; the numeral 5 the front portion of the boiler equipped with a dome 6, and at its front end leading to a smoke compartment 7 and the numeral 8 indicates the lues which, iii the usual Way, extend from the fire box to the smoke compartment.
' In accordance with my invention, the socalled baille plate 9 is located within the shell of the boiler and secured with a water tight joint` g All of the flues 8 extend through this baille plate and they should be expanded so as to form water tight joints therewith. The arrangement of perforations in the upper portion of the baille plate may vary, but as shown, is provided with upper steam passages or perforations 1() and with lower overflow passages or perorations 11. The perforations 11 are located on an altitude above all of the flues and above the top of the fire box and they determine the altitude of the water y which is within the rear compartment of the boiler. The upper perforations 10 insure always equalizations of pressure in the front and rear compartments of the boiler.
In this arrangement', the water must be delivered into the rear compartment of the boiler or back of the baille plate 9, and, as shown, this will be accomplished through a check-valve-equipped connection 13 leading from any suitable water supply. To enable an engineer, from within the cab, in keeping track of the water level in the front compartment of the boiler, a pipe 14 leads from the top of the rear compartment of the boiler and is tapped into the front compartment of the boiler, considerably below the water level, and has interposed therein a gage at the normal water level in said front compartment. Of course, the water level in the rear compartment of the boiler may be maintained in any suitable way, not necessary for the purpose of this case to further consider.
With this arrangement, the level of the water y1 in the front compartment of the boiler will be kept somewhere not far from the level indicated in Fig. 1. Obviously,
those liues 8 that are above the level of the water y1 and forward of the baille plate 9,
will be exposed inthe steam contained with-` in the front compartment of the boiler and will be made very hot by the flames that are passed therethrough. Otherwise sta-ted, they will be heated up very much likel the flues of a superheater, and the effect on the steam in the front compartment in the boiler will be Very much like that of a superheater7 that l is, the steam will belmade much drier than in the ordinary boiler.
By this arrangement, ydry steam is produced inthe most eflicient Way and economy passed to the Hue sheet of the lire-box, said baille plate having a water passage above thelevel of the flues and above the top of the fire-box, whereby a higher level of water may be maintained in the rear compartment of the boiler than inthe front compartment of said boiler, all of said ues being covered with water at the rear of said baille plate, but certain ot' the upper fines, forward oit said battle plate, being above the water level in the front compartment ot the boiler, so that they will b'e exposed in the steam chamber thereof.
2. A combination with a boiler of the looomotive type, ol a, baiie plate applied within the boiler forward within the rear end el the flues and through which the flnes are passed to the flue sheet of the lire-box, said bai'lie plate having a water passa ge above the level ofthe 'lues and above the top of the fire-box, whereby a higher level oil. water may be maintained in the rear compartmento'f the boiler than in the liront compzn-tment of said boiler, all ofsaid lues beingl covered with water at the rear of said baille plate, but certain of the upper fines, forward oit said battle plate being above the water level in the front Compartment of the boiler, so that they will be exposed in the steam ehamber thereof, and a. steam dome applied to the top of the front compartment of the boiler.
