To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JONES H. Ronnars and Gus RoLNmK, citizens of the United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protectors for the Crown of Headwear, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a protector for'the crown of headwear.

The object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described designed to be inserted within the crown of hats and caps, and particularly close fitting crowns, such as those of uniform caps, for the purpose of keeping the same out of contact with the head of the wearer, thus preventing the soiling of the crowns.

The device also serves to maintain the desired form of said crown, when applied to caps, or headwear formed of fabric or other pliable material.

A still further feature of the invention resides in the provision of a device of the character described, which is adjustable so that it may be applied to crowns of different sizes, and which may be readily applied, to and detached from said crown.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention has particular relation tocertain novel features of construction, use and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of the complete device. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation thereof, as applied to a cap. Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the supporting legs of the frame. Fig. 4 is an edge view thereof. Fig. 5 is an edge view of a sliding sleeve employed. Fig. 6 is a plan view thereof, and Fig. 7 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view of the circular disk employed in the device, showing the method of attaching the radial ribs of the frame thereto.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate similar parts in each of the figures, C refers to a disk, which is formed of cork or some similar light material, which is plain on its underside and is preferably made concaved or hollowed out on its upper side, but which has a thick outside rim for the purpose of stiffening the disk and giving suitable width for fastening the radial ribs J,

J, J, J. These ribs are formed of noncorrosive flat metal and are four in number. Their inner ends are inserted into the rim of the disk C, said inserted ends being indicated by the letters 6. The ribs are then bent at right angles to said inserted ends and the wire band (Z is secured therearound passing entirely around the disk C. The said ribs are then again bent so as to bring their outer portions into alinement with said disk.

The letters Z, Z, Z, Z designate the support ing legs of the framework, whose upper ends are turned inwardly and connected to the respective ribs J, J, J, J, by means of slip joints 6, b, b, I), as shown in Figs. 1, 5 and 6. Near the angle of each of the legs Z on the inside is a hook, said hooks being designated by the letters 9, g, g, g and these hooks support a circular fiat spring a, said spring be ing fastened at the points m, m, m, m. The spring a is formed of flexible material and is open at hand is somewhat larger in diameter than the diameter of the largest sized hat or cap, so that the spring may be easily lessened in diameter by adjustment of the joints 6, so as to fit a crown of any dimensions. The lower end of each of the legs Z has on its outside a barb, said barbs being indicated by the letters 7, f, f, 7, which project into the stiffening z' of the cap back of the sweat band h, thereby securely fastening the device in place.

The central disk C constitutes the chief feature of this invention, serving, as it does, to hold the top of the crown out of contact with the head and the frame shown for holding the same in place is of minor importance, as its mechanical construction can be readily varied in diflerent ways to accomplish the desired result. However, as this device will be used chiefly in caps, the particular frame- 7 work described will be found to be practical, not only for the purpose of holding said disk in place but also for the purpose of preserving the form of the crown.

While we have shown and described only one form of this device it is obvious that the mechanical form and arrangement thereof may be varied to suit different styles of headwear and we hereby reserve the right to make such mechanical alterations therein as will not depart from the scope of the appended claims.

A device of the character described including a disk formed of light material, an adjustable framework adapted to fit within the crown of a hat or cap and hold said disk centered relative to the top of said crown, said framework including a plurality of ribs secured to said disk and radiating therefrom, a corresponding number-of supporting legs whose upper ends are turned inwardly and adjustably secured to the respective ribs, each leg having a projecting barb which engages in the fabric of the crown and holds said device in place. 7 V
