JAMES F. DINN, OF PORT WASHINGTON, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOB TO HALL-BORCHEBT DRESS FORM COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
ADJUSTABLE DRESS-FORM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 4, 1915.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, James F. DINN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Washington county of Nassau, State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Adjustable Dress-Forms, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawin is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.
This invention relates to dress forms and particularly to that type having adjustable shoulder sections capable of adjustment for broadening and narrowing the shoulders without varyin the size of the waist line.
The ob'ect 0% the invention is to provide a novel ress form of this type having) a sim le but efiicient means for ad'usta ly hol ing the shoulder sections in t eir a justed position.
In order to give an understanding of the invention I have illustrated in the drawings a selected embodiment thereof which will now be described, after which the novel features will be pointed out in the appended claims.
Figure 1 is a view of the front half of the form looking from the inside; Fig. 2 is a view of the rear half of the form looking from the inside; Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line a:m, Fi 1.
The dress form is of that known ty e which is made of papier-mfich and is divided in sections that are adjustable relative to each other thereb to change the relative size and shape of the form. The form is supported on a central standard 3 in usual manner and it is divided vertically through the shoulders to form the front and rear halves shown in Fi s. 1 and 2, respectively, and is also divided horizontally below the shoulders thereby to provide a hip and waist portion below the division line and a neck and shoulder portion above the division line. The hip and waist portion is divided vertically to provide a plurality of hip sections 4, there being four such sections in the present embodiment of the invention. The shoulder and neck portion of the form is divided vertically in such a way as to form front and rear shoulder sections on each side of the form and the front and rear neck sections. In the present embodiment there are four neck sections 6, 5; 6, 6; 5, 5 designating the front neck sections, and 6, 6 the rear neck sections. There are also front and rear shoulder sections at each side of the form, the front shoulder sections being designated 7 and the rear shoulder sections 8. The neck sections are held in their adjusted positions in any suitable way, as by means of a clamping nut 9 at the upper end of the standard 3. In order to make a form of this sort practicable, provision must be made for adjusting the shoulder sections out and in to broaden the shoulders without chan ing the waist line, and this is accomplished herein by an adjustable connection between the upper end of each shoulder section and the adjacent neck section and an adjustable pivotal connection between the lower portion of each shoulder section and one of the hip sections. As herein shown each shoulder section has at its upper end an adjustable connection 10 which is herein shown as a slotted link or plate rigidly secured to the shoulder section and overlyin the neck section, said connection being adjustably secured to the neck section by a clamping bolt 11. At the lower end of each shoulder section is an adjustable connection 12 in the form of a slotted link which adj ustably connects the shoulder section to a hip section. This connection 12 is shown as pivotally connected at 13 to the upper part of the hip section and as extending in a diagonal or inclined direction over the shoulder section and being adjustabl secured thereto by a clamping bolt 14. ach shoulder section is also adjustably connected to a hip section under the arms, and as shown in Fig. 3, this connection is made by a slotted link 15 which may be permanently secured at one end either to the hi section or the shoulder section and adjusta ly secured to the other section.
As shown in the drawings, the link 15 for the rear shoulder section is shown as permanently connected to the shoulder section and overlies the hip section 4, it being adj ustably secured thereto by a clamping screw 16. while the connection 15 for the front shoulder section is shown as permanently connected to the front hip section 4 and as overlying the shoulder section and adjustably secured thereto by a clamping screw 16 Another connection 17 connects the two shoulder sections at their lower edge, thus permitting them to be moved toward or from each other. Each neck section is also preferably connected to the hip section by a slotted connecting member 19, and as herein shown each connection 19 is permanentlv connected to the hip section and adjustably connected to the neck section by a clamping screw 20. The hi sections are adjustably connected at their lower ends in any suitable way.
In a. form of this type the hip sections can be firmly held in their desired position and by connecting the lower ends of the shoulder sections directly to the hip sections instead of to the neck sections, I rovide a construction by which the shoul er portions of the form are more firmly and securely held than if they were connected to the neck sections. Moreover, by this construction I reduce the number of adjustable connections necessary to hold the sections of the form firmly in their adjusted position. It will be noted that the horizontal division line is higher at the front and back of the form than it is at the sides of the form. The advantage of this is that the points 13-where the connections 12 for the lower ends of the shoulder sections are connected to the hip sections are situated sulliciently above the lower edge of the shoulder sections so that the connections 12 can have a nearly horizontal position, as shown in the drawings. The lower ends of the shoulder sections are thus braced laterally as well as vertically and are firmly held in their desired position.
Having fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2- 1. In a dress form the combination with a body ortion divided horizontally below the shou ders and vertically below said horizontal division to present hip sections and also vertically above said horizontal division to present front and rear neck sections and separate front and rear shoulder sections on each side, of means adjustably connecting the upper portion of each shoulder section to the neck section, and means constituting a direct pivotal connection between the lower inner corner of each shoulder section and the hip section.
2. In a dress form the combination with a body ortion divided horizontally below the shou ders and vertically below said horizontal division to present hip sections, and also above said horizontal division to present front and rear neck sections and separate front and rear shoulder sections, of means adj ustably connecting the upper portion of each shoulder section to the adjacent neck section, and a connectin member adj ustably connected to the inner l ower corner of each shoulder section and pivotally connected directly to the adjacent hip section at a point beyond the division line between said shoulder section and the adjacent neck section.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
