1' 1 U SAKATA, 0F LUS ANGELES, CWUDMJN POLISHING OUTFIT. V
Application filed August 12, 191- 11. I serial No. hhdgtwfi.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that T, Tnnuo SAKATA, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Polishing Outfit, of which the following is a specification.
' An object of this invention is to make provision for the convenient holding and using of shoe polish or the like and for holding the necessary implements for applying said polish to shoes or the like.
Another object is to make provision for holding the polish box after it has been opened, so that soiling of the hands will be prevented.
Another object is to provide a construction which will eliminate opening and closing the cover of the polish box when it is desired to use the polish, and this is a great advantage because to insure that the polish will not dry out and harden, it is customary to make the covers of the polish boxes to fit very tightly, thereby causing great difficulty in opening the boxes when it is desired to use the polish.
Another object is to make provision for securely holding polish boxes of various aizes.
Other objects and advantages may appear in connection with the drawings filed herewith and in the subjoined detail description.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention open ready for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical midsection of the device shown in Fig. 1 in closed position. Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fig. 1, the polishing implements being omitted and the device being turned at an angle of forty-five degrees from the showing in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a view of the friction cloth extended for use.
There are provided two tubular receptacles 1, 2, preferably cylindrical, the receptacle 1 being for holding polishing implements such, for instance, as a dauber 3, a brush 4, a friction cloth 5, a shoehorn 6 and a buttonhook 7, said implement receptacle being preferably divided by partitions 8, 9,
10 so as to produce four separate compartments 11, 12, 13, 14, the compartment 11 holding the dauber, the compartment 12 holding the brush, the compartment 13 holding the friction cloth, and the compartment 14 holding the shoehorn and buttonhook. The receptacle 1 1s hinged at 15 to the receptacle 2, and the receptacle 2 is provided with box-retaining means which will now be described.
with a cylindrical inner ring or annular The receptacle 2 is provided internally band 16 which is somewhat shorter than the receptacle 2 so that the rim ofthe inner annular band will be in a plane between the plane of the rim of the receptacle 2 and the bottom of the receptacle 2 to form an annular shoulder, and the circumferential wall of said inner annular band fits snugly against the circumferential wall of the receptacle 2. The inner annular band 16' is provided with clamping means and in this instance said clamping means comprise two diametrically opposite semi-cylindrical adjustable clampmg jaws 17 which are yieldingly held toward the axis of the annular band 16 by leaf springs 18 or the like, said springs being fastened to the jaws at theirmiddle points and resting against the inner annular band at their outer ends. The jaws 17 securely and releasably hold a box 19 of shoe polish or the like, and it is evident that different sizes of boxes can be accommodated in the receptacle 2 and securely held by reason of the above described construction.
Means are provided to tightly cover the inner annular band 16 and box 19 so as to prevent air from entering the box and evaporating the moisture contained in the polilsh and these means also are designed to cover the compartments 11, 12, 13, 14:, in the receptacle 1 and to'separate said receptacle and compartments from the receptacle 2, a receptacle spaced inside of the annular band 16, and-for this purpose there is provided a diaphragm or lid 20 of smaller diameter than the receptacles 1, 2 and designed to rest upon the rim of the inner annular band 16, said lid being hinged at 21 to the receptacle 2 diametrically opposite the hinge 15 so as to swing away from the hinge 15 when the receptacles 1, 2 are in open position.
The receptacles 1, 2 are preferably of like diameters so that when they are closed in axial alinement with one another, the rims thereof abut one another, said rims being preferably formed into beads 22, 23 respectively.
The receptacles 1, 2 are normally held in closed position, axially alined and abutting one another by a resilient latch clip 24 which is fastened by suitable means as a rivet 25 to one of the receptacles, in this instance the receptacle 1, and is bent around the beads 22,
23' so as to hold said beads together to latch the receptacles 1, 2 against opening.
force outward and'a box of polish inserted, said box having first been'freed of its cover, not shown.' The device is now ready for use and the user will preferably steady the device by grasping the receptacle 1 as a handle while rubbing the dauber 3 on the polish, it being noted that in this way the .hands of the user need not come near the polish box and consequently the hands'will not be soiled and stained by the polish as is generally the case where provision has not been made to suitably hold thepolish box. The user will then manipulate the various polishing implements 3, 4, 5 as desired and as well understood, and when the polishing operation is completed the lid 20 will be closeddown over the inner annular band 16 and the receptacles 1, 2 will be closed against one another and latched by means of the latch cli 24.
from the foregoing it is clear that thedevice is a great convenience, since all the'necessary polishing material. and implements for polishing and putting on shoes are kept in a unitary device, of'minimum size and appropriate shape for packing in trunks and the like, so as to be especially serviceable to travelers.
1. A polishing outfit comprising two receptacles hinged together, an annular band inside of one of said'receptacles, and a lid hinged to one of said receptacles, said lid being of a smaller diameter than the receptacles and designed to fit over the edge of the band to tightly close the same.
2. A polishing outfit coinprising two receptacles hinged together, an annular band -ms1de-of and shorter than one of the receptacles, means insideof the annular band to securely hold a box of polish, and a lid In ractice the clamping jaws 17 will be hinged to one of said receptacles and designed'to close down tightly over the edge of the annular band.
3. A polishing outfit comprising two receptacles hinged together, an annular band inside of and shorter than .one of said close down" and designed to rest against the outer edge of the annular band and against the outer edge of said partition when said receptacles are closed together.
