Description
COSMETIC -CASE Filed July 25, 1958 IVA M. sam sozv INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Sept. 24, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 6 Claims.
This invention relates to cosmetic cases of the type intended to be carried in a hand bag or the pocket, and more particularly to a type of case for containing loose face powder and supplying it to a powder puff enclosed in the case.
A particular object of the invention is to provide a cosmetic case of the type specified, having a compartment for the powder puff, a separate compartment for the powder, and means for transferring the powder therefrom to the puff compartment in small quantities as required.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combination of several cooperating means or instrumentalities such as are necessary to securing a satisfactory make-up; and in furtherance thereof one of the objects of the present invention is to provide these several things, namely: case, mirror, cleansing pads, loose powder, puff, rouge, rouge pad, lip-stick and eye brow pencil, in a construction form and combination that should be efficient and convenient for securing the result desired.
Further objects of the invention are set forth in the following specification, which describes a preferred form of construction and an alternative form of construction of the case, by Way of examples, as illustrated by the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the improved cosmetic case shown with its cover in open position and its contents in disassembled relation to disclose the interior.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken through the median plane of the lower half of the case.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view of an alternative form of construction taken through the median plane of the lower half of the case.
As shown in Fig. l, the case consists of an upper part 2, and a lower part 4, united by hinge means 6. In the upper portion 2 of the case, cavity 8 is provided for receiving a plurality of cleansing pads l0. Overlying the cleansing pads is a tray l2 for receiving rouge cake l4, hingedly connected to the upper portion of the case at l6, and adapted, when the case is closed, to be wholly received within the compartment 8. overlying the compartment 8 and the tray I2, in such manner as to conceal both when in closed position, is the cover member 20 hingedly connected to the upper part of the case at 22. Preferably the rouge compartment is provided with applicator pad 18. The cover member 20 is conveniently provided with one or more highly polished surfaces 24 to serve as mirrors. The lower section of the case is provided with three compartments, 26, 40 and 28, for receiving respectively eye brow pencil 3!], powder puff 38 and lip-stick 32. In order to facilitate ready removal of the eye brow pencil and lip-stick from compartments 26 and 28, holes 34 and 36 are provided to permit the finger to be inserted beneath the case thereby to raise the pencil or lip-stick for ready engagement with the fingers of the opposite hand.
Referring now to Fig. 2 for a description of compartment 40 and its functions, it will be seen that there has been provided in the upper plate 44 of the compartment a depression 46 for receiving powder puff 38. On the under side of the plate 44, a shoulder 50 formed by striking out the depression 46 cooperates with annular ring 52 to clampingly engage a loose pouch 54 of any suitable powder-impervious material such as chamois skin. By this means the powder 56 is confined between the chamois and the other side of plate 44 and may escape only by passage through holes or slots 48. When it is desired to obtain powder for application to the face, it is necessary only to insert'a finger of the hand holding the case through the opening 42 whereby the powder which may have caked up into a nearly solid mass is readily broken up into its formerly fine state of subdivision.
I am aware of previous attempts to provide cosmetic cases with at least one flexible side whereby the owner of the case was enabled to loosen the compacted powder by manipulating a flexible portion thereof, but I have found such cases objectionable in that the flexible portion thereof was exposed to manipulation when the case was not in use. As a result powder tended to be transferred from the storage compartment to the puff compartment by the jostling about to which the case was subjected even when not in use.
It is to be pointed out that by my novel construction the flexible member of my powder container is accessible only through a relatively small opening in the inflexible case whereby it is protected, in large part, from undesirable pressure, while at the same time providing ready access to movement of the finger through the opening provided.
In my alternative construction, Fig. 3, I have disclosed a form of construction particularly adaptable to formation of plastic material. Such construction has the advantage of providing the necessary rigidity, while at the same time greatly reducing the weight of the finish compact. In
this construction the compartment is molded all in one piece, indicated at l provided with groove 60 which cooperates with ring 62 in engaging both pouch 54 and a sheet of pervious fabric 64, which two flexible materials serve to confine between themselves the powder 56. As the lower portion of the pouch 54 is manipulated with the finger through opening AZ, the powder Sifts slowly through the interstices of the fabric 64.
It will be observed from the foregoing that the present invention provides a particularly simple and efficient device for the purposes intended, providing as it does in a single compact case all of the materials necessary for a complete make-up.
A particular feature of improvement in the present invention consists in providing a case for containing the powder stored in a separate compartment from the puff, thereby avoiding the danger of spillage and waste. The powder is thus kept in a clean and uncompacted condition and may be conveniently supplied to the puff in small quantities as required without wasteful excess and without contaminating the other cosmetics contained in the case.
The improved method of providing the flexible powder case with an inflexible sheath is to be particularly noted for its advantageous arrangement and results.
While the invention is herein described and illustrated as embodied in a preferred and one alternative form of construction, it is to be understood that various other modifications may be made of the structure and arrangements of the parts of my device without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention. Therefore, without further limiting myself in this respect, I claim:
1. In a case for dispensing loose powder, walls defining a space for confining said powder, at least one of said walls being provided with perforations of such number and size as to dispense the powder in desired amounts, at least one other of such walls being substantially powder impervious and flexible whereby manipulation thereof will break up the loose powder when the same becomes compacted and a rigid wall provided with a finger hole overlying the flexible wall whereby said flexible wall is protected from flexing during carrying without preventing flexing by the user as desired.
2. In a case for dispensing loose powder, an internal powder container comprising a perforated wall for dispensing the powder, a flexible pouch cooperating with said perforate wall to confine the powder and a rigid wall having a finger hole therein forming part of the external case, the powder being so arranged Within the case that the insertion of a finger into the finger hole will flex the wall of the powder container to loosen the powder and assist in dispensing thereof.
3. In a cosmetic case, an upper section and a lower section, means uniting the sections carrying the case in closed position and enabling its use in open position, a compartment in the upper section for receiving cosmetic removing means, a sub-cover for said compartment adapted to conceal said compartment while being wholly received thereby; said sub-cover carrying face tinting medium, a mirror adapted to overlie and conceal said sub-cover; at least one narrow elongated compartment in the lower section for receiving a feature-outlining pencil, the lower Wall of said compartment being provided with a finger hold for elevating the said pencil to facilitate the grasping thereof, a loose powder compartment, a perforate powder dispensing sheet above said compartment and flexible diaphragm forming the lower wall of said compartment adapted to cooperate with the dispensing sheet to confine the loose powder, the external wall of said loose powder compartment being substantially inflexible except for a finger hole whereby when a finger is inserted therethrough the lower diaphragm may be fiexed to break up the compacted portions of the loose powder.
4. In a cosmetic case for dispensing loose powder an internal wall having a depression struck therein for receiving a powder pufi, the depressed portion of said wall being provided with powder dispensing holes, a flexible cup-shaped pouch adapted to cooperate with the depressed portion of the wall to confine loose powder, means for holding the rim of the pouch in tight-fitting relationship with the side walls of said depressed portion, an external case for shielding the pouch during transport, one wall of the external case lying adjacent the wall of the pouch being provided with a finger hole enabling the user to break up compacted powder prior to use thereof;
5. In a cosmetic case for dispensing loose powder a moulded depression for receiving the powder-dispensing apparatus, the floor of said depression constituting a portion of the external wall of the case and being provided with a finger hole, a flexible powder-impervious pouch conforming to the inner surface of the depression, a flexible powder-pervious diaphragm spaced from the pouch bottom and adapted to cooperate therewith in confining a body of loose powder, means for securing the edges of said pouch and said diaphragm to cooperate therewith in preventing the escape of powder at the edges thereof, the whole being constructed and arranged whereby when a finger is inserted in the finger hole, the loose powder will be agitated by fiexure of the pouch and a portion of said powder will be ejected through the diaphragm for application.
6. In a cosmetic case two spaced apart walls, one of said walls having a portion of its area provided with powder-dispensing apertures, a flexible pouch between said walls and removably secured to said first wall at points outside the apertured area whereby to confine powder between the wall and the pouch for dispensing powder through the dispensing apertures, and the second of said Walls being provided opposite said pouch with at least one aperture large enough to permit the insertion of a finger to flex said pouch.
