JOHN G. SHOWALTER, OF THREE RIVERS, MICHIGAN.
WRENCH ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 9, 1915.
Application filed June 21, 1913. Serial No. 775,038.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. Srrownnrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Three Rivers, in the county of St. Joseph, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrench Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to attachments for wrenches, and has for its object to provide an attachment which can be readily applied to a wrench so that the same can be used as a die stock.
A further object of the invention is to provide an attachment which when applied to a wrench will adapt the same to be continually rotated when applying nuts.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an attachment formed from a single piece thereby providing a device only simple in construction, will be inexpensive.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides .in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a side elevation of the wrench, showing the attachment in place thereon. Fig. 2 is an edge View of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank from which the attachment is formed.
eferring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a wrench of a well known type, the same being provided with a fixed outer jaw 2 and sliding inner jaw 3.
The attachment is formed from a blank of sheet metal, as shown in Fig. 4: of the drawing, which is so cut as to provide handle sections 4, which terminate in shanks 5, said sections and shanks being riveted together, and as the handle sections 4 are semi-circular in cross section a single handle 6 is provided with the proper curvature to form a comfortable terminate in substantially triangular plates 7, which are arranged in spaced relation of sheet metal, which is not but one which of this nature" grip. The shanks 5 and are held thus by the plate 8, said plate having one of its edges formed with an extension 9 which terminates in a right angle lip 10. The straight edges 11 of the plates 7 are formed with inwardly directed spaced cars 12, which have their confronting faces spaced apart so that the shank of the wrench 1 can pass therebetween when the attachment is being applied to the outer jaw 2.
It will be noted that the shanks 5 are riveted flush against each other, which necessitates the plates 7 being convergingly arranged for a certain distance of their depth, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing.
In applying the attachment it is only necessary that the jaw 2 be passed between the plates 7 so that the ear 12 carried thereby will engage the inner face of said jaw, and the extension 9 one end thereof. The lip 10 will also engage the inner face of the jaw 2, and in conjunction with the lips 12 the attachment will be prevented from dis engaging the jaw only when the attachment is moved in a direction away from the major end of the jaw 2.
From this construction it will be seen that the attachment can be readily engaged or disengaged with the jaw, and when in place the same will, in conjunction with the usual handle of the wrench, form an efficient stock.
What is claimed is In combination with a wrench, of an attachment therefor, said attachment being normed from a blank of sheet metal so cut as to provide semi-circular handle sections, said sections terminating in shanks, said shanks and sections being riveted together, plates substantially triangular in shape formed integral with the shanks, said plates being connected by a plate at certain of their ends, an extension formed integral with the plate and terminating in a right angle lip, spaced ears formed upon certain edges of the plates and adapted to slidably engage the fixed jaw of the wrench when the extension and lip are engaged therewith.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
