PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,753, dated May 2, 1893.
Application filed January 10, 1893. Serial No. 457,913- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JAY SMITH and CHARLES H. GAGE, citizens of the United States, residing at Llano, in the county of Llano and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe- Wrenches; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will'enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pipe wrenches, and it has for its main object the provision of a pipe wrench having a pair of fixed but reversible jaws, attached to the shank of the wrench on each side thereof, and a movable, hooked jaw pivoted between the heels of the fixed jaws.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description, and the novelty thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings:Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing our improved wrench in operative position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of one of the fixed jaws. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the fixed jaws. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the wrench, on the line &4 of Fig. 1, with the shank broken away, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the shank or handle of the wrench, with the end broken away.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
A is the shank or handle of the wrench rounded at one end for grasping with the hand when in use, and squared and tapered at the opposite end. The tapered portion is formed near its extreme end with oppositelyprojecting rivets or studs 0, a. The two fixed jaws B of the wrench are substantially triangular in outline. Each is stepped or serrated upon its two longer edges, as shown at b, and has a tapered recess 1) in its inner face extending from the heel of the jawabout twothirds of the length of said jaw (as shown in Fig. 3 and in dotted lines in Figs. 2 and 4), to conform to the contour of and engage a side of the tapered end of the shank A. These jaws are also provided with the rivet holes 5 b andb, the rivet holes of one jaw registering with the corresponding rivet holes of the opposite jaw. The jaws B are rigidly secu red to the shank A by inserting the rivets a through the rivet holes b so that the sides of the tapered end of the shank are engaged by the walls of the tapered recesses b, b, (as shown in Fig. 4,) and then heading up said rivets ct.
The movable jaw O is of the usual hooked or claw shape, serrated upon its inner or grasping edge, and is pivoted between the jaws B upon a rivet 61 passed through the registering rivet holes 6 in the fixed jaws, and through a rivet hole in the end of the movable, hooked jaw O, the end of the rivet being headed up to hold said jaw O in place.
The different parts of our improved wrench are very simple in construction, and when assembled form a very strong, cheap and durable tool. Owing to the fact that the fixed jaws are made double, and similarly stepped or serrated on their opposite edges, it is evident that when the edges in use become worn the rivet d can be removed, and the jaw C pivoted between the opposite sides of the heels of the fixed jaws, by inserting said rivet through the rivet holes b Having thus described our invention,what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A pipe wrench,comprising a shank having a squared end with integral, oppositely-projecting rivets; apair of similar, fixed jaws serrated on their opposite edges, and secured to said shank by said rivets, and having longitudinal recesses in their inner faces adapted to engage the squared end of the shank; and a movable, hooked jaw pivoted between the heels of the fixed jaws, substantially as described.
