To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. CHE- NARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county of Grafton and State of New Hampshire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to locks, and more particularly to the class of combination looks.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a lock in which the latch or bolt thereof may be prevented from sliding movement, until the combination mechanism will be brought into position for the freeing thereof, thereby permitting the unlatching pf the lock for the opening of a door or the ike.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a lock of this character which can be very cheaply manufactured, and which will provide safety from picking by unscrupulous persons, and also which cannot be opened when locked, without setting the combination mechanism for the freeing of the locking bolt or latch.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a lock which is simple in construction, and thoroughly reliable and efficient in operation.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lock constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, with one of the plates removed from its casing, showing in detail the interior mechanism of the lock. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, the lock comprises a casing 5 which may be of the construction shown, or of any other construction suitable to the purposes of the invention, the casing 5 being provided with a removable side plate 6 which permits access to be had to the interior thereof, when required. The side plate and opposite stationary side wall of the casing are formed with alining openings, through which is passed a transversely arranged spindle 7 carrying at opposite ends hand knobs 8, as
usual. It is of course understood that the casing 5 is mounted in a suitable recess formed in a door or other part on which the lock is to be used, and the spindle 7 is designed to extend or project beyond opposite sides of the door or said part on which the lock is mounted, so that by grasping the knobs the spindle may be turned for the operation of the locking bolt or latch, presently described.
Arranged within the casing is the locking bolt or latch, comprising spaced parallel latch heads 9, the outer ends of which are tionary side wall of the casing 5 at the inner side thereof. Surrounding the guide stems 14 and working against the latch heads 9 and the blocks 16, respectively, are coiled expansion springs 17, the same being designed to force the latch heads 9 through suitable openings in one end of the casing 5, so that they will be projected exteriorly thereof for locking engagement with a suitable keeper plate (not shown).
At the inner end of the wing 12 and in tegral therewith is a raised abutment enlargement 18, against which works a roll back 19 formed with a central hub 20 provided with a squared opening receiving the squared medial portion 21 of the spindle 7 so that upon the turning of the latter, the roll-back 19 will be simultaneously turned therewith, so as to act upon the enlargement 18 for retracting the latch heads 9 within the lock casing 5 for the unlocking of the dopir or other part on which the lock is carno The permutation or combination mechanism comprises a pair of disks 22 and 23,
likewise provided with a circular outer periphery, corresponding to the opening 26 in the disk 23, so that the latter will remain stationary on the turning of the spindle 24 and the disk 22 carried thereby.
The disk 23 is formed on'its outer periphery with a ratchet tooth 27 engaged by the free end of a leaf spring 28 fixed to one end wall. of the casing '5, and this spring is designed to prevent the turning of the said disk 23 in one direction, when the disk 22 is being turned on the manipulation of the spindle 24:, which latter is provided with finger knobs 29 carried on opposite ends thereof, and disposed eXteriorly of the lock casing. The disk 23 is provided with a notch 30 adapted to be brought in alinement with a lug 31 formed on the inner end of the wing 12, medially thereof, and is adapted to receive the same, although the lug is of con siderably greater thickness than the disk 23, so that it cannot enter the notch 30, until the disk 22 is rotated to bring the notch 32 formed therein and of a shape corresponding to the notch 30in the disk 23 in alinement with said notch 30. It will be seen that the combined width of the disks 22 and 23 is less than the width of 'the'housing in which they are mounted so that the disk 22 may be forced to make frictional contact with the disk 23 so as to operate the same counterclockwise to cause'its notch 30 to move out of range of the lug 3'1, and to do this the knob 29 will be forced inwardly to cause the disk 22 to contact the -disk'23 "in an obvious manner. Thus, in this manner the lug 31 will be permitted to enter the alin in'g notches 30 and'32 in the disks, where- 'upon on turning the spindle 7, the latch heads 9 may be retracted interiorly of the lock casing 5 for the unlocking of the door or other part carrying the said lock. In order to throw "the disk 23 out of operative position it will be necessary to take hold of the knob '29 and force the disk 22 against the disk 23 so that when the disk 22 is re- 'volved the "disk 23 will frictional-1y engage with the disk 22 and will be rotated therewith; inthis way the notch 30 will be moved out of alinement with the lug 31, and when the disk 22 is caused to rotate the disk 23 in an. opposite or clockwise direction the ratchet tooth 27 with which the disk 23 is provided will contact with the spring 28 whereupon it will be obvious that further rotation of the disk will be impossible. When the disk 23 makes engagement with the spring 28 it willbe certain that the notch 30 will be opposite the lug 31, and when it is desired to bring the notch 32 in registration with the notch 30 the knob 29 will be pulled outwardly so that the disk 22 shall not frictionally engage with the disk 23 whereupon. said disk 22 may be rotated separately until its notch 32 registers with the notch 30 whereby no obstacle will be in the way of the lug 31 taking into both of said notches as hereinbefore described... It will be apparent that when the notches 30 and 32 in the disk 22 and 23, respectively, are
. out of alin'ement with each other, the latch heads 9 cannot be retracted within the 'lock casing 5, thus holding the locking bolt or latch inoperative, and thereby preventing the unlocking of the door or other part carrying the lock. Mounted upon one of the guide blocks 16 is a leaf spring 33, the free end. of which frictionally engages the outer periphery of the disk 22, and this spring is designed as a friction brake for the said disk 22 to prevent the free turning thereof.
What is claimed is:
In a combination lock, in combination, a casing, asleeve mounted in said casing, said sleeve having a polysided bore, a shank passed through said sleeve and extending at opposite sides eXteriorly of said casing, an integral disk formed upon said sleeve and disposed at one side of and in said casing, a disk of equal diameter with said first named disk loosely mounted upon said sleeve within said casing adapted to be frictionally rotated by said first named disk, said loose disk being formed with a ratchet tooth, a leaf spring in said casing projecting in range of said ratchet tooth to hold said disk against rotation in one direction, said loose disk being formed diametrically opposite its ratchet tooth with a relatively large recess, said other disk being formed with a peripheral recess equal in size to and similarly shaped to said first named recess, a reciprocating lug arranged in said casing shaped to take into said recesses when the latter are brought into registration, and means for reciprocating said lug.
