The present invention relates to latches, particularly for automobile doors, and has 4 for an object to provide a latch in which the handle shaftV is adapted to be secured in such 'relation to the latch that it cannot be removed by unauthorized persons, when the latch islocked, should such persons succeed in disengaging the escutcheon plate, which is ordinarily the only means for retaining the handle against long'tudinal movement. A. further object is to provide a construction in which the handle shaft may be inserted into relation with the latch duri-ng assembly ofthe automobile with facility and Without the necessity for employing special tools,
keys, and the like.
lWth the above and other' objects in View, embodiments of the invention are shown in the accompanying drawing, and these emn bodiments will be hereinafter more fully described with reference thereto, and theinvention will be inally pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawing, the exemplary `latch embodying the present improvements frcomprises a base plate 1() provided with a dwilange 11 at its forward end having a latch C3 bolt opening 12 therein. 'I he latch bolt 131s slidably engaged at its nose end 14 in the opening 12, and is retained against displacement by means of a cover` plate l5 securedto the base plate. A coil spring 16L engaged with the inner end of the bolt normally presses it to its projected position.
At the rearward end of the bolt there is provided an upwardly projecting vertical ex-` tension 17 engaged by the inner handle rollback 18, the hub 19 'of which has bearing in 60 apertures formed in the base and cover plates 10 and 15. A coil spring 20 normally engaged at one end with a lug 21 on the rollback, and engaged" at its other end against a lug 22 struck from the base plate yieldably retains the roll-back in its normal position by engaging a projection 23 thereon with the lug 22. 4 i
The bolt is adapted to be actuatedby the outside handle roll-backfZt, through engagement with an upwardly and forwardly pro-a jecting arm 25 formed on the bolt.
The outside handle roll-back 24 has its hub portion 26 rotatably engaged at one side in an aperture 27 in the base plate, and at the other side in a circular boss 28 pressed up from the cover plate and spaced from the inner end surface of theroll-baek to provide a circular. pocket. The roll-back is provided with the usual square or polygonal opening 29, and the boss 28 is provided with a circular opening 30 of a diameter adapted to'permit rotation therein of the handle shaft, and provided at diametrically opposed points with radially extending cut- outs 31 and 32.
v The handle 33 is provided with the usual escutcheon plate 34 secured thereto, and a key operated lock 35, adapted in the locked positon to eng-age 4with a locking dog 36 secured in the door to prevent rotation of the handle. A shaft 37, of square cross-section, is secured to the handle and is adapted to fit the squareopening 29 ofthe roll-back. In the usual type -of lock it is possible in the locked relation to unscrew the escutcheon plate and then withdraw the handle, whereupon a. plane square shaft may be inserted -into the roll-back and the latch operated to open the door. The present improvements are intended to prevent such unauthorized lili till) Withdrawal ot the handle shaft and opening of the door. Y
Upon the opposed edges of the shaft, and in spaced relation to the end, a pair of lugs or hns 38 and 39 are pinched out in such relation that they may pass through the cutouts 3l and 32, these lugs bein rotatably disposed in the pocket formed y the boss 28 in the assembled relation, as shown in Figs. l and 2. lin the locked relation of the handle shattthe lugs 38 and 39 are beneath the circular ange ont the boss, out of register with the cut-outs 3i. and 32, and withdrawal ot the handle shattis prevented. As the locking of the handle prevents relative rotary movement of the shaft, rotation of the shaftto turn the 'lugs 38 andv 39 into register with the cut- outs 31 and 32 is impossible, even though the escutcheon is unscrewed lin order to assemble the handle it is only necessary to engage the end of the shaft in the roll-back opening, the circular opening 30 permitting this, asl shown in Fig. 5, and then turning the roll-back to a point where the lugs 38 and 39 register with the cnt-outs 3l and 32, whereupon the handle shaft is pressed into position with the lugs in the socket of the boss. Upon insertion of the handle the escutcheon is secured in the usual manner to the door front.
As clearly indicated in Fig. 1 the lugs lie beneath the circular Harige of the boss in the retracted and locked relation of the roll-back, ciectually preventing Withdrawal ofthe handle shaft. The circular flange provides a uniform abutment at all points of rotation of the handle shaft relatively thereto.
lln Figs. 6 and 7 ll have shown a modified form of the invention, in which the inner end ot the roll-back hub has bearin in the usual'circular hole d0 of the cover pate. A separate locking plate di', having a danged end 4t2, and provided with the circular opening 3ft and diametrica-lly opposed cut-outs 3l. and32, is secured to the casing by lugs 43 engaged in suitable slots therein. The operative relation with the handle shaft is the same as in the hrst embodiment, the lugs 38 and 39 heingdisposed in the pocketrformed beneath the plate..
ll have illustrated and described preferred and satisfactory embodiments of the invention, but it Will be obvious that changes may be made therein, Within the spirit and scope thereof, as delined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a latch, a latch casing, a latch bolt, a roll-back for retracting said bolt having a non-circular opening therein,'a handle shaft of non-circular cross-section adapted to be longitudinally engaged with said roll-back opening and including a laterally projecting abutment in spaced relation to the end, abutment means secured to the latch casing having an opening adapted to permit insertion and rotary movement therein of the non-circular roll-back engaging portion of Said shaft, said abutment means adapted to abut said laterally projecting abutment upon longitudinal withdrawal movement in the norpall non-bolt-retracting position of said rollac i.
2. ln a latch, a latch casing, a latch bolt, a roll-back for retracting said bolt having a non;circular opening therein, a handle shaft of non-circular cross-section at its end adapted to be longitudinall roll-back opening and includin@ a laterally projectin abutment in spaced relation to the end, a utment means secured to the latch casing having an opening adapted to permit insertion and rotary movement therein of the non-circularend of said shaft and having a cut-out portion adaptedto permit pasengaged with said sage therethrough of said laterally propectl ing abutment in a given position of rotation of said shaft, said abutment means adapted to abut said laterally projectingabutment uponlongitudinal Withdrawal movement in the normal non-bolt-retracting position of said roll-back.
3. ln a latch, a latch casing, a latch bolt, a roll-back for retracting said bolt havinv a non-circular opening thereimand including a hub, a circular apertured abutment boss provided on said casing and adapted to form a bearing for said hub, the inner surface of said boss being spaced from the inner end of said hub to provide an annular pocket, a handle shaft of non-circular cross-section ,adapted to be longitudinally engaged with said roll-back and including abutment means disposed in said annular pocket, said boss adapted to abut said abutment means upon longitudinal Withdrawal movement in the normal non-bolt-retracting position of said rollback.
