JOHN W. STEVENS, 0F ROSEBANK, NEW YORK.
LIQUID-HYDROCARBON BURNER.
Application filed. August 5, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN W. STEVENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rosebank, in the county of ltichmond, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Liquid-HydrocarbonBurner, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in liquid hydrocarbon burners; and the object of my improvement is to volatilize the liquid hydrocarbon and mix it with air before burning. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a photographic platen With my device inside, Fig. 2 is a plan vieW of the burners, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section elevation of one of the burners, taken on the line mn of Fig. 2.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A. is the platen. A are holes in the top of said platen to permit some of the heat to escape.
B is a tank containing alcohol.
C is a feed pipe leading from the tank to the burners.
D are retorts.
E is a small tubular orifice controlled by needle valve F with handle G.
H is an air space. i
J is the intake of the burner.
K is the burner tube with holes L.
P is a cap at the end of burner K.
R is a drip pan.
S is a packing gland around the stem of needle valve F with space T for packing.
V is a retort filler composed of metal Wire, asbestos threads or other heat resisting material inside of retort D.
"W is a vapor passage from retort D to orifice E.
The operation of my device is as follows: Alcohol is placed in the tank B, from whence it feeds down through tube G into Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented net. 9, 1915.
Serial No. 855,087.
retort D, and runs down through passage W out of orifice E into pan R. lVhen a small portion has thus run into pan R, needle valve F is closed and the alcohol in the pan R is ignited. The heat of the burning alcohol in pan R brings retort D to a high degree of heat, and vaporizes the alcohol therein. Thereupon valve F is opened and the alcohol vapor is driven from retort D through passage TV out of orifice E across air space H into the burner intake J. As the vaporized alcohol crosses air space H, it draws With it a greater or less quantity of air, thus making a suitable mixture for complete combustion. The vapor then goes into burner K out of burner holes L, where it is ignited, and makes a series of small flames at right angles to burner K. These flames heat platen A, and also keep retort D at a high temperature, thus insuring continued vaporization of the alcohol.
I claim A liquid hydrocarbon burner, comprising a tank; a feed tube connecting with said tank; a retort connecting with said feed tube; a retort filler of heat resisting material within said retort; an outlet member containing a small orifice, said orifice connecting With said retort; a needle valve controlling said orifice; an intake member disposed at some little distance from said orifice, said intake member containing an intake passage, so disposed that the vaporized hydrocarbon coming from said orifice will enter said intake passage and draw with it more or less air into said intake passage; a burner connecting with said intake passage, said burner containing holes opening toward and underneath of said retort; and
a drip pan beneath said orifice and said retort.
