Specification of Letters Patent.
Continuation of application Serial No. 721,474, filed rtovein ber ih, 1912. rins applichtion iiledJu1y11,
. 1913. Seria1No.778,435.' y
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, James A. Hnocns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Coolnand State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in reels, the present application being a con tinuation of my prior application, Serial No. 731,474, filed November 15, 1912, for reels, the object of this improvement being to provide an'improved bracket supported reel which is of simple construction and efficient in operation.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawin forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a side view of a reel embodying my invention, shown partially in section, Fig. 2, a top plan view of the same, Fig. 3, a top plan view of the reel proper, and Fig. 41, an enlarged detail section taken through a supporting socket employed in the construction. I
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a reel 1 which is mounted to rotate on a vertical supporting shaft 2 extending from the top of said reel. The specific construction of the reel proper constitutes the subject matter of my prior application referred to above and needs no further description here. Arranged immediately above the top of reel 1 is a collar 3 rotatably mounted on shaft 2 and provided with radiating arms t as shown. Slotted links 5 are pivotally connected with the outer ends of arms 4 and slide on headed'studs 6 as shown. By this arrangement it will be observed that when an article is supported on the reel, by pulling one link 5 radially the other will also be thrown outwardly and radially, the two constituting stops to prevent accidental removal of objects on the reel, as will be readily understood.
The reel is supported on an angular rod 7 which is provided with a vertical arm 8 and. a horizontal arm 9 as indicated. The vertical arm 8 is vertically and angular-1y adjustable in a supporting clamp 10 which is provided with a set screw 11 for securing arm 8 in adjusted position. Supporting clamp 10 is -secured to the edge of a table 12 ,or other suitable "support by means of bolts 13 as will be readily understooc. This consti tutes a simple and efficient support for rod 7 and one which permits of both vertical and angular adjustment.
Another supporting clamp 15 is arranged on the horizontal arm 9 of rod 7 and is provided with a set screw 15 for securing it in adjusted positions thereon. At one side clamping member 15 carries a supporting socket 16 which is provided in its outer side with an opening 17 which is smaller than said supporting socket and is of a size to permit of passage of shaft 2. At its upper end shaft 2 carries an enlargement 18 which is adapted to snugly fit within socket 16 and is provided at its upper end with a stop flange 19 adapted to engage the upper side of socket 16 to limit downward movement of said shaft. By this arrangement it will be observed that the socket member 16 may be readily adjusted horizontally on arm 9 and secured "in adjusted position. The specific form of socl'et member 16 permits of ready removal and replacement of reel 1 which greatly facilitates the positioning of articles thereon.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for can 'rying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
aving described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An article of the class described comprising a reel. supported on a central shaft extending upwardly from the top thereof, said shaft being provided at its upper end with a rectilinear enlargement and above said enlargement with a stop member; and a supporting socket member provided with a socket to fit said enlargement and with a side opening smaller than said enlargement but adapted to permit the passage of said. shaft, substantially as described.
2. An article of the class described com- ,7;
prising a reel supported on a central shaft extending from the top thereof, said shaft being provided at its upper end With a cy- In testimony whereof I have signed my lindrical enlargement and above said enname to this specification in the presence of .9 largement with a stop member; and a suptwo subscribing Witnesses.
porting socket member provided with a. JAMES A HEDGES socket to fit said enlargement and with a side opening smaller than said enlargement Witnesses: I but adapted to permit the passage of said JOSHUA R. H. Po'r'rs, shaft, substantially as described. HELEN F. LILLIS.
