WIRE-REEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 20, 1912.
Application filed March 9, 1912. Serial No. 682,661.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoHN M. Rononn, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Hosensack, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVire- Reels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wire reels and has for its object to provide a reel of this character which will run with little friction and which is held from tipping during the pulling off of the wire.
Another object of the invention is to provide a wire reel which will possess advantages and points of efficiency and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture and at the same time simple in construction and operation.
lVith the above and other objects in view my invention consists of the novel features of construction and in the cOmbinat-ion and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the claims, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved wire reel; Fig. 2 is a top plan view;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view showin b the construction of the reel slightly modified to accommodate a roll of wire netting, and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the guide member.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates a base member which may be provided at its under side with a pair of sled runners 2, whereby the reel may be moved from place to place. Rotatably mounted upon the base and supported by means of the anti-friction rollers 3, is a wire reel 4:. The reel l comprises a base member 5 having a centrally arranged opening 6, adapted to receive the supporting standard 7. Circularly arranged upon the base member and disposed at diametrically opposite points are a plurality of Z-shaped arms 8, said arms having one of their horizontal portions provided with the elongated slots 9, adapted to receive an adjusting bolt 10, said bolt having a nut 11 threaded on its upper end to hold the arms 8 in any adjusted position. The other or upper horizontal portion of the arms 8 extends outwardly toward the outer edge of the base member 5 and is adapted to be arranged over the reel of wire 12 to hold the strands of Wire in place while being unrolled. In placing a roll of wire upon the reel the arms indicated at a and b are turned until their upper or horizontal portion is disposed inwardly toward the center, the nuts 11 being loosened to allow the arms to swing. One side of the roll is then engaged beneath the arms indicated at c and cl and the other side dropped into position on the opposite side of the base member, the arms a and 6 being then turned back to their normal position. In unrolling the wire I provide a suitable guide member 13 which is secured to one corner of the base member 1, having an opening 13 formed in its upper end through which the end of the wire is passed and then drawn off along the fence or any other place where the wire is to be used.
If for any reason the wire is to be wound up I provide a standard 14 having its lower end bent at right angles and detachably engaged beneath the keeper members 15 on the base 5, said standard having a crank handle mounted upon its upper end whereby the reel may be turned to wind up the wire.
In Fig. 4 I have shown a wire reel slightly altered to accommodate a roll of wire netting. In this construction I provide a connecting sleeve 16 threaded upon the upper end of the standard 7 and adapted to receive the lower threaded end of the extension standard 17. In order to place the roll of netting upon the reel the arms aand 0 are to be removed from the base member, and the arms Z) and (Z are turned so that their upper horizontal portion is disposed inwardly toward the center of the reel. The lower end of the roll of netting is then placed over the arms and (Z. A guide member 18 is provided which comprises an elongated plate having a centrally enlarged portion 19 which is provided with the opening 20 to receive the extension standard 17 upon which the plate is slidably mounted. Tire ends of the guide member are provided with the elongated slots 21, adapted to receive the threaded studs 22, which are formed integral with the angular guide members 23 and nuts 24: are threaded upon the ends of said studs to hold the guide members in various adjusted positions. To prevent the upper end of the roll of wire net-ting from swinging from side to side the guide members 23 are arranged upon each side of the central opening in the roll and I engaged therewith. It will be seen that these guide members 23 can be adjusted upon the plate so as to fit various sizes of rolls which may be used.
It will be seen that by adjustably mounted upon the base 5 various sizes of reels can be easily and quickly arranged upon the base.
From the above description taken in con nection with the drawings itwill be readily seen that I have provided a simple and durable wire reel whereby a roll of wire may be easily and quickly placed upon the reel and wound and unwound as desired.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying the invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope thereof.
What I claim is 2- 1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a base, a wire reel rotatably mounted upon said base and having a centrally arranged opening, a supporting standard mounted upon the base and disposed in said opening, said wire reel comprising a base member, Z shaped arms having one of their horizontal portions adjustably mounted on the base member and disposed at diametrically opposite points, and a connecting sleeve threaded on the upper end of said standard, an extension standard threaded into the upper end of said sleeve, of a guide member slidably mounted upon the extension standard, said guide member comprising an elongated plate having a central enlargement provided with an opening to receive the extension standard, said having the arms 8 Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the plate having elongated slots formed in each end thereof, angular guide members having studs formed integral with their horizontal ortions and adjustably arranged in said slots, and the vertical portions of said guide members being arranged in the central opening of a roll of wire netting to prevent the same from swinging from side to side.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a base, a wire reel mounted upon the base, said reel comprising a rotatable base member having a centrally arranged opening, a supporting standard mounted upon the first base and disposed in the opening in the rotatable base member, a sleeve threaded on to the upper end of said standard, an extension standard threaded into the upper end of said sleeve, Z shaped arms having their lower horizontal portions adjustably mounted upon the base member, the upper horizontal portions of said arms being adapted to be disposed inwardly toward the extension standard or outwardly therefrom, a guide member slidably mounted upon the extension standard, said member comprising an elongated plate having its central enlargement provided with an opening to receive the extension standard, said plate having elongated slots formed in each end thereof, angular guide members having studs formed integral with their horizontal portions and adjustably arranged in said slots, and the vertical portions of said guide members being disposed in the central opening of a roll of wire netting to prevent the same from swinging from side to side.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. JOHN M. ROEDER.
