To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY E. CoLLnYs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hammond, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pocket-Locks, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to locking means intended chiefly for securing the pockets of garments to prevent articles from losing therefrom or being appropriated by unauthorized parties. 7

While the invention provides a lock especially adapted for use in connection with pockets, it is to be understood that such lock may be applied to hand bags, satchels,

pocket books, and the like.

The invention consists of a lock embodying a plurality of plates which are arranged one against the other, one of such plates constituting a latch and the remaining two plates being secured to the parts to be fastened.

The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated and claimed.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawings, by the same reference characters.

The lock is oblong, comparatively narrow, and flat, so as to lie between the parts of a pocket or between the members of a pocket book, satchel, hand bag, or the like, without causing a bulky appearance. The lock comprises essentially three members, a back plate 1, a front plate 2, and a latch plate 3. The back plate 1 is provided with hooked studs 4:, whose outer ends are made tapering and beveled so as to pass readily through openings in the front plate and latch plate.

The back plate 1 is adapted to be secured to hooked studs 4:- A stop 7 is formed near the middle of the plate 2 and is partly cut therefrom and pressed laterally at a right angle. An opening 8 is formed in the plate 2 near one end and receives the finger piece 9 of the latch plate 3. A plurality of keepers 10 are arranged near the longitudinal edges of the plate 2 and are formed by partly cutting portions from such plate and pressing the same laterally. The plate 2 may be secured to the other part of the pocket in any manner such as stitching and for this purpose a plurality of openings 11 are formed in opposite edge portions of such plate. The latch plate 3 is narrower than the plate 2 and is slidable thereon, being retained in place by means of the keepers 10. Openings 12 are formed in the plate 3 in position to receive the hooked studs 4:. The finger piece 9 is arranged at one end of the plate 3 and is formed by partly cutting a portion from such plate and bending the same therefrom at a right angle. A housing 13 is pressed outwardly from the plate 3 and receives an expansible helical spring 14, such spring being confined between one end of the housing 13 and the stop 7 and normally exerting a pressure to hold the latch plate in engagement with the hooked ends of the studs 4 after the latter have been passed through the openings 6 and 12. The

latch plate is moved so as to release the hooked studs by outward pressure exerted upon the finger piece 9. The finger piece 9 has a limited movement in the opening 8 of the plate 2.

It will be understood from the fore going, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, that the invention provides a lock which may be readily attached to a pocket, hand bag, pocket book, or analogous article so as to secure the same and prevent articles from dropping from the pocket or being surreptitiously taken therefrom, the lock being simple in construction and of such form as not to cause a bulky appearance of the part to which it is attached.

connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are Within the scope of the invention as claimed.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A. look of the character specified, comprising a plate having a hooked stud, a second plate having an opening to receive the hooked stud and formed with a stop, a latch plate slidably mounted upon the second plate and having an opening in position to receive the hooked stud and formed with a finger piece projecting through an opening of the said second plate and having a housing pressed therefrom, and an expansible helical spring arranged within the housing of the latch plate and confined between the end of such housing and the stop of the said second plate.

2. A look of the character described, the same comprising a plate having hooked studs, a second plate having keepers near its longitudinal edges formed by partly cutting portions therefrom and pressing such cut portions laterally, such second plate having openings to receive the hooked studs and having a stop pressed laterally therefrom and provided near one end with an opening to receive a finger piece, a latch plate slidably mounted in the keepers of the second plate and having openings to receive the hooked studs and having a housing and a finger piece pressed laterally therefrom, and an expansible helical spring arranged within the housing and confined between an end thereof and the stop of the said second plate.
