Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 22, 191%.
Application filed May 25, 1914. Serial No. 840,864.
To all 11 7mm it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. REACH, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicopee, Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hurdles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in hurdles of what is known as the Foster type, in which the hurdle is hung off center between two standards, and hence two different heights can be secured by turning the hurdle upon its axis, presenting first the low side and then the high side. My invention is designed to utilize this idea but to extend it so as to get three heights of hurdle, and this object is attained very simply by slots in the standard reinforced by plates if the standard is made of wood, so as to get the additional adjustment without detaching the hurdle from the standard.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 shows a front elevation of the hurdle; Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
In this drawing, the standard is shpwn at A, the base pieces at 13, all of ordinary or improved construction while the hurdle frame is composed of the rectangular section C pivoted off center at a to the standards. The hurdle is clamped securely in its adjusted positions by a clamping handle 6 of usual construction. It will be seen that in the position shown in the drawing a certain height is secured, and by turning the hurdle until the lower side is uppermost a greater height is secured. This is what is known as the Foster type of hurdle. My improvement consists in slotting the standards or forming a recess therein, and placing over the recess on the outer face preferably of each standard a plate a which has an inclined slot 03 terminating in a seat 6 at the upper end. It will be seen that by simply lifting the hurdle through the limit of the slots at and allowing the pivots a to fit into the seats 6 an additional adjustment is secured, and this of course may be varied according to whether the low or high side of the hurdle is swung upward.
The simplicity of the construction will be obvious as well as its effectiveness.
I claim as my invention In combination with a swinging hurdle, standards supporting the pivots of the hurdle, and two or more seats for said pivots in the standards with an open connection between the seats whereby adjustment may be secured without detachment, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM F. REACH.
