Be it known that I, JOHN R. LONG, citizen of the United States, residino' at Akron, in the county of Summit and tate of Ohio, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Bench-Vises, of which the following is a specification. j
This invention relates to yan improvement in bench vises, and the invention ,consists in the construction and combination of parts Substantially as shown and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

The said screw enables me to make reined adjustments to` take up possible wear at thisfpoint as well asto provide an exposed vbearing for the thimble 19, but when the jaws are released tensionl on screw 18 also is relieved.
vA further material improvement in the present vise over the above application resides inthe shape-of the top bearing surface of bar B for the yoke E. In the above mentioned lapplication the said bar is shown as 'y being fiat transversely on its top but in the present instance I have made the said surface of inverted V` shape, thus providing a riding edge 20; for the aw D which has correspondingly inclined sides guided thereon and this serves also to keep the top of the 'said bar clear from foreign accumulations;
`A further improvement is found in the clip 22 adapted to be engaged over the rear end of bar B and to seat at its sides upon the top edges of the upwardgextensions 10 on the shank of jaw C. The said edges are straightand correspond to the side edges of the clip resting thereon, and a lifting screw j 28, engages throughl the top of said clip and into" a threaded holein the end of bar B. `W hen the said screw is tightened it has a lifting action or eect on bar B and to this j extent relieves down pressure on the screw 18 and 'enables the vise -to be rotated on its base without releasing the stock gripped "thereincby turning the screw S, as would be'necessary if the said clip were not employed. Releasingy screw S would also release'4 the stock, but by means of said clip the stock can be kept in the vise and the vise rotated. lThe yoke E is flared from rear to front to engage with locking effect on both barB and jaw D, and the bottom b of bar Bis inclined upward from rear to front andthe back d ofjaw D is at a somewhat greater inclination vrearward and downwardl according to the top flare in said yoke sovthat when the said yoke and jaw are movedto clamping'position the jaw will'be veifectually locked and cannot slide away i f under pressure. l By making the inclined edge Z9 less than 15y degrees as show-n and 'placing the yoke in a more or less tilted relationthis locking is made very effective.

The construction of yoke E and the bar B and jaw D are such that when the said jaw is released or loosened from work and drawn back the yoke E will not only become loose Y alsol but drop down and rest on the top edge of the shank 7 of jaw C. The heavy transverse bolt 9 through the ears 10 of the outer jaw member C serves more especially as a back stop for the jaw D. Of course the vise `can be used without the clip Q2, but said.

clip is very useful when the work is heavy and there is need of swinging the vise around in either direction before the work fsaid clip takes the pressure off of the bolt L19 suiiiciently to enable the vise to be rotated on base A. By the term bolt I mean the two parts 18 and 19, because a single solid bolt will serve my purpose but I use a two-part bolt by preference so as to have an. adjustable portion to take up wear thereon.
lVhat I claim is:
1. In vises, a base of substantially dish shape having a flat top and a down flange about its edge and an opening in its center7 a friction member inserted from beneath vthrough said opening and bearing against the bottom of said base and provided with cheek portions projecting through said opening and provided with a channel between them7 in combination with a jaw having a shank seated in said channel between said cheeks and a screw through said friction member and engaged in said shank and adapted to lock said parts together upon said base.
2. A vise having a base and a friction member rotatable in said base having a hub, an outer jaw having a shank fixed in said hub, a bar supported at one end on the rear end of said shank and provided with a spindie engaged through the base of said jaw, an inner jaw slidably mounted on said bar and a yoke connecting said inner jaw operatively with said bar.
8. A vise having a base, a friction memf ber rotatably mounted in said base and provided with a walled channel exposed above the base, an outer jaw having a tapered shank locked in said channel through said `friction member, in combination with an In that case thev inner jaw, a bar on which said inner jaw is sldably mounted and supported at one end on an upward extension of said shank and at the other end in the base of said outer jaw, means to draw said bar lengthwise to tightened position and a bolt under the heel of said bar bearing down upon the said base and adapted to lock the vise against rotation when it is engaged upon an object.
4. In a vise, an outerjaw having a tapered shank and an upturned outer eX- tremity and a base on which said jaw is rotatably mounted, a bar having one end supported on said extremity and provided with a spindle at the other end projected through the base of the jaw and internally threaded, a rotatable tightening screw engaged in said spindle and a bolt in the rear of said shank adapted t0 lock said bar against rotation on said base, and an inner jaw slidably confined upon said bar.
5. A vise as described having an outer jaw member having a shank provided with an upturned divided outer end, a jaw supporting bar mounted at both ends on said jaw member and removably supported thereon, an inner jaw adjustably mounted on said bar and a yoke about said inner jaw confining the same operatively on said bar, in combination with a base supporting said jaw member, a locking bolt inthe heel of said bar bearing upon said base and a screw in said bolt to take up wear.y
6. A vise having a bar and an outer jaw Copies of this patent may be obtained for adjustably mounted thereon and provided with a split upwardly turned end and a transverse bolt in Said end, in combination with a bar mounted on said bolt and having a spindle projected into the base of said jaw, a clip seated over the end of said bar and resting at its sides on the sides of said "upturned end and a screw through said having a substantially V-shaped channel in its bottom edge, slidably mounted on said inverted V-'shaped top edge, and a yoke operatively confining said parts together.
8. A vise vof the kind described having an outer jaw, and a suitable support onwhich said jaw is slidable, and a yoke operatively confining said parts together, said jaw being provided with a bead about the neck thereof adapted to shed ilin s from vits sides and prevent the same rom falling upon said support and yoke.
