Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 1, 1912. Serial No. 687,758.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Beit known that I, WILLIAM J. CHAMBER- LAIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Walnut Ridge, in the county of Lawrence,
tate of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package- Bands; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in bands especially adapted for tying letters or the like so that the same may be conveniently handled.
rlfhe invention has for its object to produce an article of this character so formed that the same may be easily and quickly ma* nipulated for tying packages of letters and the like, so that the same may be easily handled during transportation.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective View of the device showing the same in use upon a package of letters. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the band before being applied. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1- designates the band, the same being formed from a strip of pliable metal. One end o f the band is provided with integral and laterally projecting ears 2, the purpose of which will appear later. The other end of the band is folded upon itself for a short distance to provide an eye 3, and in which is pivotally connected the elongated ring 4, the same being of such size as to readily permit the passage of the ears 2 when the band is bent previous to its application to aA package of letters or the like.
Loosely mounted upon the band l is a slide 5, the same consisting of inner and outer elongated loops 6 and 7, respectively, the latter being slightly greater in size than the former. The loop 6 is adapted to slidably receive the band l, and is of such size that the ears 2 of the band and the ring l Will prevent the accidental removal of the same.
i I/Vhen in use, the band 1 is passed around a package of letters or the like, and the end thereof carrying the ears 2 is passed through the ring l for a certain distance of its length and is so bent that it will pass through the loop 7 of the slide 5, said slide confining the bent end of the band at this lpoint, it ofcourse being understood that the and has been adjusted upon the package of letters or the like. As the band l is formed of pliable metal, it is obvious that upon moving the slide so that the loop 7 thereof disengages the bent end of the band, the same will be loosened sufficient-ly to permit inspection of the package, and may be readily tightened upon moving the slide 5 so that the loop 7 thereof will engage the bent end of the band l.
'Ihe slide 5 is formed from a single length of sheet metal, and is so bent as to form the loops 6 and 7, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
What is claimed is:
A band of the class described formed from a strip of pliable sheet metal having one of its ends formed with laterally extending ears, an elongated ring pivotally connected to its other end, said ears being adapted to pass through the ring when the band is folded, a slide freely movable from end to end of said strip and consisting of a pair of closed loops, one of said loops being greater in size than the other, thesmaller loop being adapted to slidably receive the body of the strip, while the larger loop is adapted to engage one end of the strip after the same is passed through said ring and is bent upon the body of said strip, and in alinement with the remaining portion thereof and adjusted upon package, said ears being of such dimensions as to prevent passage thereof through the smaller loop to prevent loss of the loops whenl the band is in its inoperative position.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM J.' GHAMBERLAIN.
