FASTENING DEVICE.
Patented Apr. 8. 1890.
dQ m if %W dd ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
JAMES A. TURNBULL, ,OF ESSEX COUNTY, NEW JERSEY.
FASTENING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,115, dated April 8, 1890.
Application filed June 20, 1889- Serial No. 314,964. (No model.)
.To all whom it may 00 rwern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES A. TURNBULL, of Essex county, in the State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clasps or Fastening Devices for Bundles or Packages, of which the following is a full description of the drawings.
Figure l is a view of the clasping device, showing the locking-bar in combination with the ring or loop and tape. Fig, 2 is an edge view of the'same; Fig. 3, a view of the ring or loop with tape attached, the latter passing through the split or opening in the locking bolt or bar. Fig. 4 illustrates one form in which the locking-bar may be made. Fig. 5 is the same with the addition of a handle. Fig. 6 is another form of the same or modification thereof; Fig. 7, a View of a locking bar or bolt having two slots, and showing the manner in which the tape runs therein.
\Vhile my invention is designed for use in clasping or tying packages of papers, &:c., it may be adapted for belts or for any other purpose to which it is applicable.
In the drawings, A is a ring or loop, circular, oblong, or of any suitable form, to one side of which is attached a tape or band or cord.
B is a locking bolt or bar, which'may be made of two pieces of wire twisted together at the ends to form a slot or opening, as shown in Fig. 4, through which the tape is passed, or
it may be made of one piece of wire bent together to form a slotted bar, or it may be made simply of a piece of tin with a slot, as shown in Fig. 6, or with two slots, as shown in Fig.7. This form of cross-bar, which may be described as a link with a cross-bar across its center in the direction of its length, is the best form, for the reason that the pressure being applied to the center bar will cause the link to be held flat upon the under loop and prevent its upsettingand consequent looseningof thebuckle, as will occur with the other forms. The tape or cord is slipped through the slot in the bar, and is preferably made so that it may slide upon the tape, having sufficient friction to prevent it from falling off. The bar may be adjusted to the tape before passing the latter around the bundle or package, and when the bundle is inclosed the bar is put through the ringor loop, then turned until it rests upon the loop, so that the bight upon the tape clasped between the bar and the edge of the ring holds it in place. The ends of the bar may be taken between the thumb and finger and pulled back to loosen the tape, or the bar may be provided with a handle, as shown at Z), Fig. 5.
WVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A fastening device comprising a tape having a ring or loop secured to one end thereof and a detachable cross-bar consisting of a closed link with a cross-bar across its center in a direction transverse of the tape and loosely mounted on the tape, the cross-bar adapted to be passed through the ring or loop and secured, substantially as described.
