UNITED STATES PATENT ALFRED an, or 1:\TE\VYORK, N. Y.

SAFETY-LOCK. 1
., more particularly to key operated locks.
One of the principal objects of my invene tion is to providea lock which may be adjusted to be positivelyheld in locked or un locked position, or to be locked or unlocked i at will by means of a key.
Another object is toprovide a lock which may be .quickly and easily applied to any door and one which has no parts liable to become disarrangedflor-broken. v I
A further object is to provide a safety lock which will besimple, durable, efficient in operation and inexpensive to manufacture.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated. in the accompanying drawings, in
which like reference characters indicate like 3 parts through the several views, and in which,
Figure 1, is an elevational view of a portion of the backside of a door, showing the lock applied thereto. Fig. 2, is a horizontal transverse sectional view taken through a door and frame showing the lock in position. Fig. 3, is an elevational View of the front side of the door equipped with my lock. Fig. 1, is a fragmental view showing the guard plate, used when the-lock is attached to a door having a plane frame. I
Referring more particularly to the drawing, a circular base plate 1, is secured to the rear side of a door 2, near the outer edge thereof by means of screws or other fastening means 3, and this plate is centrally apertured to receive a stub shaft 4, which has its central portion squared as at 5, the squared portion extending through one end of a looking bar 6. A plurality of studs or lugs 7 are formed integrally with the base plate 1, or secured thereto in any desired manner, these lugs extend rearwardly and have secured Specification of Letters Patent. 1
Application filed July 31, 1913. Serial No. vsazee Patented July 21, 191 i.
thereto, by means ofscrews 8, a' cover plate 9. The plate 9., is centrally apertured to receive the rear rounded end of stub axle 4, the front end of said stub axle extending into a circular recess 10, formed in the rear side of the door. A reduced bore connects the recess 1.0, with the front of the door, and iv in this bore is adapted to be inserted .a cir cular key 11, whichhas its inner end formed with a tongue 12adapted to engagea slot in the inner end of stub shaft 4, whereby said shaft may be turned to raiseor lower lock 1 bar 6.
.A keeper 13, is secured'to the door frame 14:, and is adapted to receive the outer end of the lock bar 6, when in lowered position,
for holding the door in closed position. By
1 reference to Fig.1, it will be noticed that one of lugs 7, limits the upward movement of lock bar 6, but allows said lock bar to beraised a suflicient distance to clear the hook-"por tion 15 of keeper -13L' A knob orhandle 16,
is screwed into lock bar 6, about mid-way thereof, whereby said lock bar may be raised or loweredlfrom the insideof'thedoorf A threaded aperture is formed near the justed to engage either of two recesses 18, formed in look bar 6, said screw when engaging the lower recess as'shown in Fig. 1, will hold lock bar 6 in raised position, or when engaging the upper one of recesses 18, will hold lockvbar 6, in lowered position as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. It
19, which has an opening 20, therein, said opening alining with the bore through which key 11 is adapted to extend. A disk 21, having a slot 22 therein, is adapted to be seated in recess 10, between the inner end of stub shaft 4 and shoulder formed at the junction of said recess and a bore through which the key extends. Upon locking bar periphery of cover 9, and is adapted to receive. athumb screw 17 whicl1.may-be lad.-
6, from the outside, the said disk may be i turned when the end of tongue 12, lies flush with the end of stub shaft 4, so as to turn the slot 22 at an angle to the slot in the end of stub shaft L, to prevent the insertion of an instrument into the last said slot for unlocking the door.
In cases where the inner edge of the door frame 14 is plane, (Fig. 4) a plate 23, may be secured to the inner edge of the door so as to overhang the door frame, said plate being secured opposite the keeper, whereby the insertion of a screw driver or other instrument between the edge of the door and frame, to raise the lock bar, may be prevented.
Although I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention, such changes may be made in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as do not depart from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is;
1. A safety lock comprising a plate secured to a door, a stub shaft extending therethrough, a lock bar secured at one end to said stub shaft and adapted to engage a keeper, said lock bar having a plurality of openings therein, a cover spaced from said plate, a thumb screw carried by said cover and adapted to engage in either of the openings in said lock bar for locking the latter in operative or inoperative position, and further adapted to be adjusted so as not to obstruct the path of said lock bar, a key adapted to engage said stub shaft for swinging said lock bar.
2. A safety lock comprising a base plate secured to a door, a stub shaft extending through said plate and into a recess in said door, a lock bar secured to said stub shaft adapted to engage a keeper, a cover spaced from said base plate and secured thereto, means carried by said base plate for adjustably holding said lock bar in locked or unlocked position, a key adapted to engage said stub shaft for raising or lowering said lock bar, and a disk adapted to be turned by said key for preventing the rotation of said stub shaft by an instrument.
3. A safety lock comprising a plate secured to a door, a stub shaft extending through. said plate, a lock bar secured to said shaft and adapted to engage a keeper, means for holding said lock bar in locked or unlocked position or for permitting free movement thereof, a key to engage said stub shaft for swinging said lock bar, and means for preventing the operation of said stub shaft by an instrument.
4. A safety lock comprising a plate secured to a door, a shaft rotatable insaid plate, a lock bar on said shaft and adapted to engage a keeper, a key for engaging said shaft for operating said bar from the outside of the door, and a knob on said lock bar for operating the same from the inside of the door.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALFRED RE.
