Description
(No M0881.) "I, AUSTIN.
LATCH AND LOOK COMBINED.
No. 405,241. PatenteaJune 18, 1888.
UNITED STATES lPATENT OFFICE.
JOHN AUSTIN, OF FENELON FALLS,.ONTARIO, CANADA.
LATCH AND LOCK COMBINED..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Fatent No. 405,241, dated June 18, 1889.
Application led October 25,1888. Serial No. 289,159. (No model.) Patented in Canada September 25, 1888, No. 29,904.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN AUSTIN, of Fenelon Falls, in the county of Victoria, in the Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Latch and Lock, (for which I have received a patent of the Dominion of Canada, No. 29,904, dated September 25,1888;) and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is applan of the interior parts of my improved latch and lock in position as when operative by a knob-spindle. Fig. 2 is a like view of the same when the bolt has been retracted by the knob-spindle from the latched position; and Fig. 3 is a like view showing position of parts when the bolt has been operated by a key to lock the door.
The object of myinvention is to improve the construction of combined spring latches and locks in which the bolt is operated by a knobspindle and locked by projecting it from the latched position by a key.
My invention consists in the combination of parts, as hereinafter described, and pointed out inthe claim.
1 is the case or shell of the latch and lock, provided with a post 2, having a hole to receive a screw to fasten the cover to the case.
3 is a post on which is hung a pendulum 4, having posts 5 6 and a notch 7.
8 is a spindle-tappet j ournaled in the cover and case, and provided with a square hole 9, to receive a knob-spindle for operating the latch. The spindle-tappet has two arms, the shorter one 10 engaging the pendulum 4 at notch 7 at the top end, and the longer arm 11 engaging the post 5 of the pendulum,.so that by turning the tappet in either direction one of said arms will move the pendulum rearwardly in the lock-case adversely to the resistance of a spring projecting the latch to retract bolt 12, which is provided with a transverse slot h near the rear end, with which slot post Gof the pendulum engages and supports the bolt horizontally. The opposite end of the bolt bears in an opening in the front edge of the case in the ordinary manner.
The bolt near the middle is provided with spring to force the bolt outwardly may be adopted. The provision of the arms a a to the bolt allows it to be reversed for right and left hand locks.
d is a bearing cast with the lock-case, and on it the bolt frictionally slides; but such bearing, if desired, may be dispensed with.
The dog 14 isY sleeved on a post 15, cast with the lock-case, and it has an arm e, which .works through a slot in the top edge of the` lock-case, and a hooked nose to engage with the upper turned end b of arma of the bolt, to prevent the bolt being retracted by turning the knob-spindle when the bolt is at the latched position, as shown in Fig. 1. When the dog is in engagement with the arm, the
bolt is inoperative by a key.
17 is a post cast integrally with the lockcase, and 18 a slot in the bolt having a proj ection g on the upper side which engages one face of the post to limit the spring movement of the bolt when at the latched position.
The bolt is thrown to a locked position by a key entered at the key-hole 19, and engaging the bolt to lift the rear end, whereby the projection g will be lifted over post 17, and said rear vend by gravity will then fall into engagement with the opposite face of the post to prevent the bolt being retracted by turning the knob-spindle, and therknob-spindle will not be operative until the key again returns the bolt to its former position. The
lower end of the pendulum is engaged by the key simultaneously with said key lifting the bolt over post 17 to retract the bolt from the locked position.
I claim as my inventionn The combination, with the lock-casev provided with posts 3, .15, and 17, of the pendu- The other end of the spring is re-v IOO lum 4., hung to post 3, and having posts 5 G, post 15, and engaging one of said mms, and the Spindlelnppot S, having* zulns 10 1l, en- :L spring 13,110 move the bolt, subsiantiallyas gaging with the pendulum, the bolt 12, lmv- Set forth.
