RAIL-FASTENER.
To all whom t may concern Be it'ltnown that I, SIMON C. COLLINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Falmouth, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new' and useful Rail-Fastener, of which the fol,- lowing is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a fastener, adapted to be assembled with a pair of rail ends, vto pre piercing the rails for the reception of the common and well known securing bolts.
With the above and other objects 1n view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described` and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the i invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

1n the accompanying drawings, a pair of rails are shown and denoted by the numeral 1. Each rail, in its flange portion is equipped with a notch 2. Base plates 3 lie beneath the rails 1, and each base plate 8 is equipped with a transverse flange l. As depicted in Fig. 8, a diamond shaped lug 5 upstands from the base plate 3 and is formed integrally therewith. The base plate 3 may be provided with a longitudinal slot 6. In the flange of each rail there is an opening 7 receiving a headed fastener 8 (see Fig. l).

In the side face of the rail retainer 9 there 4is a notch 11.
The rail retainer 9 is equipped in its lower edge with an opening 12 which receives the base plate 3, there being a finger 14C at one end of the opening 12 which finger extends beneath the base plate. To the retainer 9, adjacent the other end of the opening 12 a latch 15 is pivoted as indicated at 16.
The invention includes a second rail retainer 17 having an opening 18, a finger 19, and a latch 20 which is pivoted as indicated at 21 as hereinbefore described.

the side face of the retainer 17 there is a notch 23 into which the pin 22 fits, the rail retainer 17 overhanging the upper end of the pin.
1n practical operation, the latch 15 isv manipulated so that the retainer 9 may be straddled upon the base plate 3, the inner end of the latch 15 and the finger 14 engaging beneath the base plate. rllhus, the rail retainer 9 may be located between the lug 5 and the flange 4 of' the base as will be understood best when Fig. 8 is compared with Fig. 2. The rail retainerl 17 is mounted in place in a similar manner. From the foregoing it will be seen that because the diamond shaped lugs 5 on the base plates are interengaged with the notches 11 of the rail retainer 9 and with the notches 2 of the rails 1, relative longitudinal movements between these elements will be prevented, there being no necessity for piercing the rails 1 to form bolt holes.
The headedy fastener 8 which is lodged in the opening 7 of t-he rail 1 engages with the slot 6 in the plate 3, and thus relative longitudinal movement between the rails is prevented. The head of the fastener 8 is wider than the slot 6, and consequently, the fastener cannot drop through the slot. Upward movement of the fastener 8 is prevented by reason of the fact that the rail retainer 17 overhangs the fastener as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
The lower end of the pin 22 passes through the flange of the rail 1 and abuts against t-he base plate 3. Since the pin 22 is engaged in the notch 23 of the rail retainer 17, each rail is interloclred with the retainer, and
relative longitudinal movement between the rails will not be possible. Further, the pin 22 cannot move upwardly, because the retainer 17 overhangsthe upper end of the pin as will be understood best from Fig. 5.
Any or all of the foregoing means will be found thoroughly eiiective for the ends in view. v
It has been stated hereinbefore that the lug 5 is formed integrally with the base plate 3. If desired, the diamond shaped lug may be fashioned separately from the base plate, as indicated at 27 in Fig. 10.y Under such circumstances, the base plate is constructed as shown in Fig. 9, the base plate being indicated generally by the reference character 24 and including if desired, the slot 26 and the flange 25.
