EQUALIZER-HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LOUIS C. STRUENSEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oshkosh, in the county of Winnebago and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Equalizer-Holder, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a holder, preferably formed of metal, for receiving the equalizer bar or evener upon vehicles, and is designed for use upon vehicles having a tongue upon which more draft animals are to be used upon one side of the tongue than the other, and is particularly adapted for use where three animals are to be used, although I do not confine its use to any specific number of animals. It consists of a holder having two parallel leaves, spaced apart at one end and closed at the other, the open end to be pivotally mounted upon the tongue of the vehicle in the place where the equalizer bar or evener, is usually mounted, the closed end being provided with a device, preferably a hook, to which a chain or other flexible member can be connected, and intermediate the ends but nearest the pivotal end, with a U shaped holder adapted to receive and carry an equalizer bar, the device being adapted for use in connection with a sheave pulley upon the vehicle reach with a chain running from the hook upon the holder around the pulley and thence to an eye bolt in the axle near the wheel upon the same side of the reach, and the object is, to obviate the side draft which is caused by an excess of pulling power upon one side of the tongue.

Figure 1 is a plan of the forward wheels of a vehicle, the axle, the sand board, a part of the reach and part of the tongue, with my improvement attached to the tongue, and an equalizer bar with whiflietrees, it showing in dotted lines the tongue swung toward the right and axle and wheels swung accordingly, (the hounds are not shown in dotted lines as it would unnecessarily make the drawing less plain,) and showing the position the equalizer holder and equalizer bar will assume relative to each other when the tongue is thus swung. '1, indicates the vehicle reach; 2, the axle; 3 the axle hounds; 3 the tongue hounds; t, the tongue; 5, the sand board; 6, the bolster and stake; 7 the wheels, one being omitted in Fig. 2; 8, the bolt connecting the tongue hounds to the axle hounds; 9, the pulley holding pieces upon the reach. These pieces may be bolted to the reach as shown, or in any other suitable manner.

10, indicates the sheave pulley; 11, the equalizer holder; 12, the bolt which connects the equalizer holder to the tongue of the vehicle; 13, the chain which connects the equalizer holder and axle; 14, the equalizer bar; 15, the bolt connecting the equalizer bar and its holder.

The equalizer holder is formed of two leaves, 6 and c, of suitable size of bar iron or it may be of malleable cast iron, or cast of steel, the leaves being spaced apart at one end for receiving a vehicle tongue, and connected at the other end where a hook f, is provided with which to connect the chain 13. The upper leaf is curved slightly for providing a seat (1, for an equalizer bar to rest upon, and with a U shaped piece 6, between the upper part of which and the seat cl, an

equalizer bar is adapted to be pivotally iounted upon the bolt 15. The chain extends from the free end of the equalizer holder around the pulley upon the reach and thence to an eye bolt 16, in the axle at a point between the wheel and reach. This chain from the equalizer to the axle by the way of the pulley upon the reach, relieves the side draft caused by two draft animals upon one side of the tongue and one upon the other.

It will be evident that the equalizer holder can be made to extend to the left of the tongue instead of the right as shown, and the equalizer bar turned end for end for bringing the two draft animals upon the V part which extends rearward from the axle along its central longitudinal line of draft, the pulley may be mounted-upon such central line part, and such central line draft part which servesas a reach, will be considered in these specifications asthe equivalent of a reach. I

The equalizer bar to be used with this holder may be simply a straight bar of wood with placesupon it for being connected with a tongue and for the attachment of whifiletrees, but the kind preferred is the one shown in Fig. 1, an evener 1913, No. 1,064,561.

Having described my invention-, what I claim and desireto secure by Letters Pat ent, is,-

1. An equalizer holder for use upon a velhicle havingv a tongue and reach, consisting of a device adapted to be pivotally convnected to a vehicle tongue at one end thereof,

means for connecting a flexible member,

such as a chain to the other end, means :for pivotally mountlng an equalizer bar intermediate 1t-s ends, in combination with a flexible member and a sheave pulley,

the latter being mounted for revolution upon the vehicle reach and the former passed around said pulley and being connected with the vehicle axle.

2. An equalizer holder for use upon a vehicle having a reach and a tongue, consisting of the spaced apart leaves 6, 0, adapted to receive a vehicle tongue between them and be pivotally mounted thereon, the seatd, the U shaped part 6, extending over said seat and being adapted to have an equalizer" bar pivotally mounted between it and said seat, and the hook f, at the'free: end of the holder.
