Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GIOVANNI MAGNASCO, OF GENOA, ITALY.
MANUFACTURE OF AND WATERPROOF MATERIAL FROM PAPER SHEETS.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it lmown that I, GIOVANNI MAGNASCO,
subject of the King of Italy, residing at Genoa, Italy, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Flexible and \Vaterproof Material from Paper Sheets, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to improvements in the manufacture of a material constituted by one or more layers of superposed paper sheets, and protected or not by an inner tissue or by woven threads or metal wire, whereby these superposed sheets will be made flexible and Waterproof by a special process of gluing and tanning by which treatments the paper undergoes a transformation in its structeure so that a new product of charteristic features will result.
The new material obtained in the described manner ma be advantageously adapted for many difierent uses as packing material for all kind of goods, for the substitution of waxed linen cloth, for the manufacture of sacks for chemical products, cement and similar products, fora leather imitation, for the manufacture of machine belts and so on.
For the manufacture of the new flexible and waterproof material, according to the present invention and without using any inner protecting tissue, one proceeds as follows: Two separate mixtures will be prepared; one for the gluing called the mixture A and the other for tanning called the mixture B. The mixture A is composed of animal glue and glycerin, or animal glue, glycerin and albumin, or animal glue, glycerin, linseed oil, albumin, camphor and sulfur. The mixture B is composed of formic aldehyde and water, or may also be one of the known tanning means, which principally contain tannic acid, chromic acid and so on. The paper sheets to be used for obtaining this new material will be first coated all over or impregnated by the gluing mixture A, afterward one of the faces of each single sheet to be coated with the tanning mixture B while after this treatment the sheets will be superposed in such a number as to obtain the desired thickness, and, finally the whole will be subject to a very high compression. The material obtained in the described manner, after having been strongly compressed, will be stored, or according to the use to Specification of Letters Patent.

which it will be subject, will. again be immerged in the tanning material and afterward dried. The material so treated will finally be coated with paraffin or other fats and thus ready for use.
The process for the manufacture of flexible waterproof material protected by tissue, woven threads or metal wires does not vary from the above described process, but in the interposition of a tissue of any manufacture or woven threads arranged in such a way as to run parallel between the single sheets or to intersect each other.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is 1. A process for manufacturing flexible and waterproof material from superposed paper sheets which consists in treating single paper sheets, before superposition, with a gluing mixture having animal glue and glycerin therein, treating them also with a tanning mixture so as to render them insoluble and tanned, subsequently subjecting a plurality of the sheets to a high compression,
and finally coating the material so obtained with a fatty substance.
2. A process for manufacturing flexible and waterproof material from superposed paper sheets which consists in treating single paper sheets, before superposition, with a gluing mixture having animal glue, glycerin and albumin therein, treating them also with a tanning mixture so as to render them insoluble and tanned, subsequently subjecting a plurality of the sheets to a high compression, and finally coating the material so obtained with a fatty substance.
3. A process for manufacturing flexible and waterproof material from superposed paper sheets which consists in treating single paper sheets, before superposition, with a gluing mixture comprising animal glue, glycerin, albumin, linseed oil, camphor and sulfur therein, treating them also with a tanning mixture so as to render them insoluble and tanned, subsequently subjecting a plurality of the sheets to a high compression, and finally coating the material so obtained with a fatty substance.
